Big filing update: my firm recently filed a federal lawsuit in the Southern District of New York involving Kalshi, prediction markets, and the resolution of an event contract titled “Who will Trump Meet with in 2025.”

The complaint alleges that the contract resolved in my client’s favor under its published criteria, but that Kalshi failed to honor the contract and later restricted my client’s ability to withdraw liquid cash from his account.

This case raises important questions about what happens when financial technology, regulated event markets, platform discretion, and customer funds collide. Prediction markets are growing quickly, but that growth makes it even more important that platforms apply their published contract terms consistently and transparently.

I’m proud to represent my client in pressing these issues in federal court.

The allegations are set forth in the complaint. Defendants have not yet responded, and the merits remain pending.

Thanks to the Brooklyn Eagle for coming out to our August Young Lawyers Section Pub Night and for highlighting some of what we’re working on at NYSBA YLS.

I was quoted in the article saying that “getting involved is a chance to build power and to advocate for our profession and its advancement.” That really is what I want young lawyers to take away from YLS.

Our monthly Pub Nights are an opportunity to meet other attorneys, judges, and members of the profession in an informal setting—but we also want young lawyers actively involved in deciding what issues the organized bar takes on.

We recently held our first program on student debt, with 173 registrants, and we’re now working on programming around AI and something I think does not get discussed nearly enough: how to navigate leaving your first legal job, including severance, leverage, and the practical issues young attorneys often encounter for the first time.

If you’re a young lawyer with an issue you think the bar should be addressing—or you want to help us build one of these programs—I want to hear from you.

And, of course, come find us at a future YLS Monthly Pub Night.

Really pleased to see NYSBA’s recap of our Young Lawyers Section program on student debt and financial planning.

One of the points I tried to emphasize during the program is that we can give young lawyers better tools to manage student debt while also acknowledging that this is a much larger structural problem—one that will ultimately require advocacy and policy change.

In the meantime, practical information matters. Our panel did a fantastic job addressing student loans as part of the broader financial picture, from repayment strategies and long-term financial planning to bankruptcy and discharge.

The tremendous turnout and engagement with this program made clear just how much our law students and young lawyers want—and need—more programming in this area.

Thank you again to our panelists and everyone who helped make the program happen. I’m looking forward to continuing the conversation.
