Happy President’s Day from Bragar Eagel & Squire, P.C.!
DID YOU KNOW? Federal law identifies Washington’s Birthday (actual date: February 22), popularly known as Presidents Day, as a legal public holiday. Like all legal holidays, it impacts the computation of federal court deadlines. For instance, in Mason v. Ceresini (D. Del. 2024), the court noted that when a legal filing deadline fell on President's Day, the deadline was automatically extended to the next business day under Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 6(a)(1)(C). The serves as an important reminder that even small procedural details can make the difference in court. This President's Day, we're reminded that while we honor our nation's leaders, we must also honor the rules and deadlines at the heart of our legal system.

Happy Valentine's Day!
Here’s a little Valentine's Day trivia in honor of the holiday.
In Danes v. Senior Residential Care, (E.D. Wis. 2007), a defendant disclosed birthday and anniversary cards under Rule 26(a)—but held back the Valentine's Day card until the final pretrial report.
The defendant argued Plaintiff gave her the card, so he knew about it. It wasn’t a surprise.
The Court wasn't buying it.
"A Valentine's Day card is not a birthday or anniversary card." When the relationship timeline was central to the case, the late disclosure created "sufficient potential for prejudice."
As a result, the Court excluded the card.
The takeaway? You can't pick and choose which evidence to disclose. Discovery violations have consequences—even for Valentine's Day cards.
