Excellent overview of the history of special ed law and the current dismal state of affairs at OCR, my old office. Has anyone with pending cases in the NY office has had any status updates on their cases?

The admissions process sorts applicants into tiers based on their seventh grade GPA. But those tiers often overlap with race, poverty, and other factors that can hurt historically disadvantaged students.

Hello everyone!

I am a member of the
ARISE Coalition- a group whose members have joined together to provide a collective and powerful voice in support of students with disabilities and learning differences in the New York City public schools.

As we move forward into the next school year, and as a part of our commitment to improving the day-to-day experiences of and long-term outcomes for these students, ARISE is seeking (1) feedback from parents and caregivers about their students’ experiences with
special education in NYC public schools during the 2023-2024 school year, and (2) input on what they would like to see improved next year.

To that end, we’ve designed a short survey, independently from the Department of Education. The survey includes 20 questions that cover a range of topics from related services to transportation. It should only take about 5-10 minutes to complete, and respondents
have the option of remaining anonymous.

We have included this survey below (in English, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic), along with a
sample email (complete with links) you are free to use or modify, so that you can share it widely with your networks. We are eager to hear directly from families about their students’ experiences as we build our advocacy agenda for the next school year.

2023-2024 School Year Survey you can use the link provided

Glad to see chalkbeat shining a light on the issues kids with disabilities face at the specialized high schools. Still waiting for the result of the civil rights complaint we filed against BK Tech! https://www.facebook.com/share/AAyAbYi7NMx6LFja/?mibextid=CTbP7E

Across all high schools in the city, 1 of every 5 students are mandated to receive special education support under an IEP. At specialized high schools, that number is only 1 of 50.
