Small business owners (and individuals), take note: if you are sued, you can't be hauled into court just anywhere. Jurisdiction must be proper. You are NOT personally responsible for your loved one's nursing home debts unless you volunteer to be. If you get a bill from a skilled nursing facility for a parent, friend, or loved one be sure to contact an attorney who focuses on estate planning and/or elder law. BUT, do note that if you intentionally transfer or spend down their assets to avoid paying a nursing home you could be on the hook.
