Black in Historic Preservation (BiHP) Presents:
“Still in Love”: a Virtual Valentine’s Day + Black History Month Celebration for the Black Heritage Sites We Love

Closing out our first of this series (shall we do it again?), is a love note to the preservationists – this one’s for you!

“To All the People Working to Preserve the African American Past,

African American history is vital to understanding U.S. history!!!

Thank you to all the professionals and volunteers who are working to protect and preserve the sites that tell this part of our national story.

We need you now more than ever.”

Signed, Anonymous Sleepless in Seattle

As Jeffree sang, “Our Love’s Gonna Last,” for Black Heritage Sites, especially in times like this.

To keep that love going, this post includes a few resources on what you can do to keep the love going for Black Heritage Sites in the US. Thank you to Sarah Marsom () for sharing, in her latest e-news, links to calls to action from the following that appear in this post: National Council on Public History, American Alliances of Museums, Cultural Heritage Partners, Monica Rhodes, Brad White, and Dr. Jessica BrodeFrank.

Be kind to yourself and others.

Black in Historic Preservation (BiHP) Presents:
“Still in Love”: a Virtual Valentine’s Day + Black History Month Celebration for the Black Heritage Sites We Love

Say hello to LaVilla Black MasonicTemple of Jacksonville, FL, as we listen to one of the more famous short-time residents of Jacksonville, who played in the Ritz Theatre in LaVilla for a year, Ray Charles.

Architect John Anderson Lankford, the first professionally licensed architect in Virginia (1922) and Washington, DC (1924), led the design of the Temple.

“Located in the neighborhood that gave birth to Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing by the Johnson brothers, the LaVilla Masonic Temple is a testament to the prosperity, ingenuity, and excellence of the African American community in Jacksonville.

LaVilla dates to the end of the Civil War when U.S. Colored Troops settled a community after the war ended.

Completed in 1916, this Prairie-style building housed retail on the 1st floor, offices on the 2nd and 3rd floors, and the Masonic lodge on the upper floors.

It has been home to Black-owned businesses throughout the 20th century and is still owned by the Masons.

It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It has stood as a beacon in the LaVilla neighborhood since it was built.”

Signed, Adrienne Burke ()

Black in Historic Preservation (BiHP) Presents:
“Still in Love”: a Virtual Valentine’s Day + Black History Month Celebration for the Black Heritage Sites We Love

Swinging it back to the Midwest, to share a sweet sentiment about a beloved building in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with a little help from The Dells, of the singing dulcet harmonies kind, not the watersled Wisconsin Dells kind 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾

Say hello to the Alonzo Robinson Jr.’s Central City Plaza …

My Dearest Central City Plaza,

From the moment you rose in 1973, you were more than concrete and glass—you were a promise realized. Fourteen Black-owned businesses stood within you at a time when fewer than 1% of Wisconsin businesses were Black-owned. You were a symbol of self-determination, a place where opportunity flourished against the odds.

Alonzo Robinson, Jr., Wisconsin’s first registered Black architect, designed you with precision and purpose. Your clean lines and symmetry embodied New Formalism—classical yet modern, bold yet refined.

But today, you stand at risk. Yet, you are not forgotten. We will work to preserve your legacy.

With admiration,
A Grateful Witness
