On his New Bedford estate, now the site of Brooklawn Park, Ricketson built a shanty which would become a welcome meeting place for his many literary friends, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Lloyd Garrison, William Ellery Canning, George William Curtis, Bronson Alcott, Oliver Wendell Holmes and Henry David Thoreau.
