# # # The Benefits of Notarization

In a world where trust and authenticity are paramount, notarization plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of important documents. Whether you are finalizing a business agreement, validating your identity for legal purposes, or transferring property, notarization offers a layer of protection and credibility that is indispensable. Let's delve into the benefits of notarization and how the Rockford Agency can assist you with your in-person notary needs.

# # # # Understanding Notarization

Notarization is the official process that deters fraud and ensures the proper ex*****on of documents. This process involves a notary public, an impartial official who verifies the identity of the signers, ensures they understand the document's contents, and confirms that they are signing willingly and not under duress. Once these conditions are met, the notary public affixes their seal and signature, officially notarizing the document.

# # # # Key Benefits of Notarization

1. **Prevents Fraud:** The primary purpose of notarization is to prevent fraud. By verifying the identity of the signers and ensuring the documents are signed willingly, notaries protect against the unauthorized use or alteration of documents.

2. **Ensures Legal Compliance:** Many legal documents, such as deeds, wills, and power of attorney forms, require notarization to be valid. Notarization ensures these documents meet legal standards and can be recognized in court.

3. **Enhances Credibility:** A notarized document carries more weight and credibility. It signals that the information within has been verified and that the signers are who they claim to be.

4. **Provides Record Keeping:** Notaries maintain detailed records of all notarizations performed, which can be valuable if a document's authenticity is ever questioned.

5. **Facilitates International Transactions:** Notarized documents are often required for international dealings, such as property transactions or legal matters abroad. Notarization ensures these documents are accepted and trusted globally.

# # # Cybersecurity and Email Safety: Protecting Yourself from Online Threats

In our digitally driven world, cybersecurity is a critical concern. With the rise of online threats such as spoofing and phishing, it's essential to understand how to protect yourself. The FBI provides valuable insights into these threats, helping individuals stay safe online. This article will explore the basics of spoofing and phishing, and offer practical tips for enhancing your email security.

# # # # Understanding Spoofing and Phishing

**Spoofing** is the act of disguising a communication from an unknown source as being from a known, trusted source. It can occur in various forms, such as emails, phone calls, and websites. The primary goal is to trick the recipient into providing personal information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive data.

**Phishing** is a type of spoofing that specifically targets email users. Cybercriminals send fraudulent messages that appear to come from legitimate sources, urging recipients to click on malicious links or download infected attachments. These emails often create a sense of urgency, prompting immediate action without thorough scrutiny.

# # # # Recognizing Spoofing and Phishing Attempts

To protect yourself, it's crucial to recognize the signs of spoofing and phishing. Here are some red flags to watch for:

1. **Unexpected Requests for Sensitive Information**: Legitimate organizations will never ask for passwords, Social Security numbers, or financial details via email.
2. **Suspicious Email Addresses**: Check the sender's email address carefully. Often, phishing emails come from addresses that look similar to legitimate ones but have slight variations.
3. **Generic Greetings**: Phishing emails may use generic greetings like "Dear Customer" instead of your name.
4. **Urgent or Threatening Language**: Be wary of emails that create a sense of urgency or fear, prompting immediate action.
5. **Unusual Attachments or Links**: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown sources.

# # # # Protecting Yourself Online

To enhance your cybersecurity and email safety, follow these practical tips:

1. **Use Strong, Unique Passwords**: Create complex passwords for your accounts, and avoid using the same password across multiple sites. Consider using a password manager to keep track of them.
2. **Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)**: Adding an extra layer of security, such as a text message or authentication app code, can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access.
3. **Keep Software Updated**: Regularly update your operating system, browser, and other software to protect against security vulnerabilities.
4. **Be Skeptical of Emails from Unknown Senders**: If you receive an unsolicited email, do not click on links or download attachments. Instead, verify the sender's identity through another channel.
5. **Educate Yourself and Others**: Stay informed about the latest cybersecurity threats and share this knowledge with friends and family.

# # # # What to Do If You're a Victim

If you suspect you've fallen victim to a spoofing or phishing attack, take immediate action:

1. **Report the Incident**: Contact the company or organization that was spoofed and inform them of the attack.
2. **Change Your Passwords**: Immediately update passwords for your email and any other accounts that may be compromised.
3. **Monitor Your Accounts**: Keep a close eye on your bank statements and credit reports for unauthorized activity.
4. **Report to Authorities**: Report the incident to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov.

# # # # Conclusion

In an increasingly sophisticated era of cyber threats, being vigilant and proactive about email safety is crucial. By understanding spoofing and phishing and following the best practices outlined above, you can protect yourself and your personal information from cybercriminals. Remember, cybersecurity is everyone's responsibility—stay informed, alert, and safe.

Should You Hire a Private Investigator?
By Bradley Wynn, The Rockford Agency, LLC

Why should you hire a private investigator?

Hiring a “private eye” is certainly not a common sounding thing but happens all the time. In most cases an investigator helps gather information necessary in finding loved ones or missing persons, identifying illegal activities, aiding in custody, civil, or criminal cases, or a wide range of other matters. The goal of a legitimate investigator is to uncover the facts and, through their efforts, bring closure and if possible, peace of mind to every client, although this is not always possible. If you feel the services of an investigator can help you find information pertinent to your case, there are some things to know.

What should you know about training, certification, and experience?

Oklahoma requires private investigators to be bonded and go through extensive mandated training and a lengthy application process. Each investigator is licensed through, and must provide annual continuing education documentation, to the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET). You can confirm and view the history of any investigator’s license by visiting CLEET’s online registry link below. Many investigators have extensive experience in law enforcement, investigation, or private security.
Experienced investigators work through professional networking, honed over years, and can access a diverse variety of unique information sources that the general public and legal entities may not have.

How should you be prepared and what should you expect when hiring a private investigator?

An investigator cannot read minds, and a good investigator only relies on facts, not assumptions or opinions. Don’t waste anyone’s time. When looking to hire an investigator, be prepared to share those facts, preferably legibly written, or typed out, including any pertinent documents, receipts, photos, video, etc. If a matter has reached the point where an investigator is called on, then usually there are mixed emotions involved, and those involved with the situation may be feeling sensitive. Please understand that an investigator, while empathetic to your need, still must rely on facts and cannot offer any real answers until the investigation is concluded.
Unlike the movies or television, data gathering, applicable travel, or surveillance, study of and interpretation of that information, takes time and requires patience. Also be aware, that an investigator may be required to testify in court, and they will only testify to the facts their investigation reveals, which may not always align to your personal views or desires.

What should you know about the cost of hiring a private investigator?

There is a cost for any private investigation. That does not mean you can’t negotiate but respect the professional you seek out and the experience that comes with their efforts to help you. Be prepared to pay a retainer or flat fee. Depending on the case, the investigator may only charge you a flat fee. If it is more involved, there will be a retainer, and if any traveling is involved, expenses and mileage will be included. What those fees are will vary from case to case, not because the investigator is trying to “get all you got” but because experience has taught them “cost vs complexity”. The cost of a case rests solely on the complexity of and the requirements put forth by you, the client. You are encouraged to ask questions and have a clear understanding of what these costs might entail.
Retainers, also known as unearned retainers, allow an investigation to proceed in phases to curb wild spending and see any gains from the case work prior to additional expenditures. They are the upfront fee, an advance payment, to secure the efforts of the investigator. These fees don’t guarantee an outcome or final product. If the cost of the retainer is less than planned, the remaining balance is refunded. Fees earned with case closure are retained, thus the name retainer fee.

What should you expect when the case is closed?

After a case concludes, where applicable, there is a written report of the investigator’s findings and fact-based conclusions, including any but not all relevant photographs, video, audio, and documents associated with the case. This exception prevents out-of-context conclusions or confusion. The investigator will also talk with you one-on-one and answer any other questions you might have. You can also ask the investigator to file and serve any pertinent forms or paperwork after the case for either a flat fee or included with the retainer.
Each case and its unique complexities determine if it is resolved in a day, a week, months, or years. Not every case can be closed, but most clients’ requests regarding the case are met and the case concluded. Not always to the client’s satisfaction. Sometimes results aren’t about champagne and celebration, but reflection and sometimes grief. Again, a true investigator strives to bring closure and when possible, peace of mind to their clients.
