If you knew your Uber driver just got out of prison for armed robbery, would you get in?

Under Florida law, you'd never even know.

This isn't hypothetical. A 20-year-old woman celebrating her upcoming birthday was brutally assaulted by her Uber driver, an eight-time convicted felon with a documented history of violence against women. Uber's response? That they did nothing wrong because his approval didn't violate Florida law — the same law they lobbied to put in place.

Florida's rideshare statute has a built-in loophole: convicted felons are only disqualified for five years after their conviction. That means someone with multiple violent felony convictions — armed robbery, home invasion, assault — can legally drive passengers the moment that clock runs out. An offender could even spend that five-year period in prison and potentially become eligible to drive for a rideshare platform shortly after release.

Uber got what they wanted in Florida. And now they’re pushing Congress to take this same broken system national.

Florida's law already makes it nearly impossible to sue a rideshare company, even when they're directly at fault. The Fong Amendment currently in Congress takes that and doubles down, wiping out rider protections that have existed for over a century. Even if drivers commit crimes like assault or sexual assault, there would be no way to hold them accountable. Rideshare companies would answer to no one.

If this passes, it doesn't matter what state you live in. Uber got what they wanted in Florida. And now they’re lobbying Congress to take this same system national.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported that major insurers paid nothing on more than 44% of homeowner claims resolved nationwide in 2024. Florida is the worst state in the nation for unpaid homeowner insurance claims, with more than two in five claims resulting in no payout from insurers.

That raises an important question: If litigation has collapsed, insurer costs are declining, and claims are increasingly resulting in no payment, are homeowners actually receiving the coverage they believe they purchased?
