Hats off to New Rep Mersi for holding this event. Yes, if you do the crime you should do the time, but once you’ve paid that debt we need to let them back into society. If you want to keep offenders from committing another crime let them get a job. Banning them forever from the job market ensures an underclass.

State Rep. Bob Merski, of Erie, D-2nd Dist., hosted the event, which included a job fair.

Pay Down Holiday Credit Card Debt
Because of rising interest rates, it’s becoming more expensive to carry credit card debt. If you haven’t paid off your holiday purchases yet, it’s a good idea to do so as quickly as possible.

Here are a few tips:

Pay your credit card bill more frequently. Many people don’t realize that credit card companies will accept more than one payment a month. If you’re paying interest on an outstanding average daily balance, you’ll pay less over time if you send in money when you have it rather than waiting until you receive the next monthly bill.

Look for a lower interest rate. Many credit card issuers offer 0 percent interest balance transfer cards, which can make paying off a balance easier. But take into account any fees that may be charged by your balance-transfer card. Your best bet would be to get a fee-free balance transfer card. If you go with a balance-transfer card, pay the minimum due on time every month. Being late often terminates the 0 percent deal and can eliminate any savings on interest.

So many Erie-area residents have received scam calls regarding their Social Security numbers that both Erie and Millcreek Township police issued news releases last week cautioning people about them.

The caller tells victims that their Social Security number either has been suspended, deactivated or needs to be verified.

None of this is true. The scammer is trying to get the victim to send them money to “reactivate” their Social Security number or convince them to give them their Social Security number over the phone.

You don’t want to do either of those things, police said in their news releases. Just hang up without talking to them, or start screening your calls to avoid them altogether.

The Social Security Administration doesn’t suspend or deactivate your Social Security number. It will issue you a new number on rare occasions if you have a serious problem with identity theft and someone is using your current number.

So why do scammers want to know your Social Security number?

They can use it to obtain other personal information about you, then use that information to apply for credit cards in your name. The scammers buy things on these credit cards and don’t pay the bills, which damages your credit rating, the Social Security Administration said on its website.

I would have probably advised him to go a different way at the hearing. He could have asked for bond pending appeal. Threatening to kill the judge, officers or just about anyone else will tend to offend the court and not result with the intended outcome.
