Friday evening question for the farmers.
If you’re farming family ground, do you actually know what happens to it when your parents die?
Not what Dad has said.
Not what everybody assumes.
Have you actually seen the estate plan?
Because what the family thinks is going to happen and what the documents actually say can be two very different things.
So I’m curious.
Have you seen the plan?

Dad is 72.
His new wife is 52.
And his son has spent his adult life farming Dad’s $6 million farm.
Dad thinks he has a simple solution.
Let his wife have the farm for the rest of her life, then leave it to his kids.
But there’s a problem.
His son could spend the rest of his farming career renting his own family farm from his stepmother.
Dad wants to take care of his wife.
He also wants his son to eventually have the farm.
How would you accomplish both?

What happens when the family that owns the farm and the family that farms it want two different things?
Dad’s three kids inherit 1,200 acres. None of them farm, so they keep leasing it to the same family that has farmed the ground for decades.
Then another farmer offers $150,000 more per year in rent.
The longtime tenant can’t match it without making the farm unprofitable.
That’s $50,000 more per year for each of Dad’s kids.
So now what?
Do you reward the family that has taken care of the ground for 30 years?
Or take the extra $150,000?
You guys keep telling me to lease the farm.
Tell me what you’re doing with this one.
