Harvey Saltz (1938-2021) sadly passed away on March 7 2021. He had spent most of 2021 battling complications from Diabetes and from Cancer caused by the BRCA2 gene. He endured a great deal during his fight until the very end. I think he will be most remembered for his wit and clever intelligence.
Harvey moved from New York to California at the age of 10. Harvey was very skilled with his hands. He spent his young adult years constructing and installing cabinets for house trailers and constructing rattan and standard furniture. He then repaired and sold radios and televisions. When in the United States Air Force, he started out as a computer technician. His skills promoted him to Technical Instructor for computers and RADAR while stationed at e Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, MS. Harvey was honorably Discharged from the Air Force, which is why he was honorably covered by an America Flag on the day of his death. Following the Air Force, Harvey worked in the aerospace industry as an associate engineer on the design and repair of military computers. He then became a technical writer of repair and operational manuals. While working as an engineer, Harvey attended the San Fernando Valley College of Law, which led to a job as Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County. He then joined a private law practice in Encino. The entrepreneur bug got him, and he pioneered an entirely new industry within the credit reporting field. This company ran credit and eviction reports on anyone applying to rent a residence. After Harvey sold the business in 2004 and “retired”, he became a published author. Harvey was born to Lillian and Abraham Saltz. His siblings included Phillip, Thelma, and Irwin. He married Jackie Saltz in 1961, fathered Rogers in 1967 and Michael Saltz in 1971. He was a father-in-law to Rogers and Beth Sonnenburg Saltz, and grandfather to Zoe and Madison Saltz. Harvey will be missed by his family, friends and colleagues more than he will ever know.
Donations in Harvey’s name may be made in his memory to the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, Pancreatic Cancer Action, BRCA Foundation and BRCA Exchange.
A Zoom tribute will be held sometime in April.
