What Does “Disabled” Mean Under the Law?
In legal practice, the word “disabled” has a specific meaning. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, a record of such an impairment, or being regarded as having such an impairment.
A medical diagnosis alone does not automatically establish a legal disability, and neither public opinion nor assumptions determine whether someone qualifies. Courts and agencies look to evidence, medical documentation, and the actual impact an impairment has on daily life.
Legal terms have legal definitions, and every claim should be evaluated on the facts and the law—not speculation or personal belief.
