Companies spent years training us to pay monthly for simple tools, then they raised the price and assumed we’d stay.

I had used the same mileage app for years. Since 2020 the subscription has nearly tripled. Same log. Same categories. Same export. Just a much bigger bill with zero new features.

So I stopped renewing today and built my own.

In about 90 minutes I had GigGuy Miles Tracker: a personal mileage log with dated entries, notes, and three buckets I actually use — business, medical, and charity. Totals by month and year. A tax-year report. CSV export. Nothing fancy. Nothing I have to ask permission to keep.
That is the part subscription companies keep missing. A lot of these apps are not moats. They are forms, a database, and a reminder. Useful, yes. Worth a 200% markup because the logo is familiar, no.

Vibe coding did not replace every product. It did make the simple ones optional. If the tool is mostly data entry and a total at the bottom, the switching cost just collapsed.

I would have kept paying. They got greedy. Ninety minutes later I do not need them.
