Our office received a call today wherein a potential client was seeking legal representation following a telephone call they received from someone claiming the potential client missed an appearance for jury duty and therefore purportedly had a warrant for their arrest. This potential client was told if they paid the caller $2500, the matter would be resolved.
With the potential client’s permission, I am making this post to warn others of this scam. If someone contacts you through the telephone and claims a warrant or citation has been issued against you and demands any sum of money from you, please be advised this is a scam. Never provide anyone over the telephone your credit card numbers, bank account numbers or purchase any gift cards for them. Some of these scammers mask their phone numbers with names of legitimate businesses.
You cannot go to jail for civil suits (ie, not paying a medical bill or credit card). Legitimate debtors must send you proof of debt in writing.
Also, the courts will never expect you to pay anyone over the telephone a fee to avoid a warrant or citation for missing jury duty. It would be incredibly uncommon for a court to issue a warrant even if you did miss jury duty.
Always feel free to reach out to my office at 270-599-1020 if you fear you are facing arrest. Even if I am quick to tell you that what you experienced was a mere scam, I would much rather you reach out to our office than stress or become the victim of a financial scam.
