Q: My spouse knows my passwords. Is that enough?

A: No. Getting in is not the whole plan.

You might be thinking, “My spouse will just use my password.” But what happens when a verification code goes to your unavailable phone? Or your spouse needs the provider’s help and must show their authority to act?

Knowing your password does not establish that authority. Providers have their own processes, and the legal authority your spouse needs depends on the account and applicable law.

Before your family needs access, identify which providers offer authorized-user or other approved access arrangements. Check when each option applies, including whether it works during incapacity or only after death.

The goal is a plan your family can use without having to guess, not simply a password that works today.

Your spouse knows where your important accounts are. But would they know which account pays the mortgage, where the insurance policy lives, or whether they have authority to act if you cannot?

Knowing which accounts matter is helpful. It is not your plan.

You trust your spouse. You still want a plan for your children.

If either of you has children from an earlier relationship, “whatever is left goes to the kids” deserves more than an understanding.

A direct insurance payout generally gives your spouse control. A properly designed trust can provide instructions for support and what remains. Read about the tradeoffs.
