Once you have figured out your child's sensory triggers, it's important to have a plan on how to help them through the sensory overload. Even knowing all the triggers, doesn't mean you can eliminate all sensory overload. But having a plan for how to work through it can be the difference between being overwhelmed at that moment or working towards regulation and calm.

Stimming is an important coping mechanism which helps aid regulation. Stimming often involves repetitive movements, see above examples. Stimming can also be very unique to each individual child.

The DSM-5 includes stimming as part of the diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder: “Stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, use of objects, or speech.”

It’s important to note, no one can stop self-stimulatory behavior completely. Secondly, even if one stim can be removed, it will be replaced by another.
