On March 14, SAUR and the Juniata community participated in the 17 minute walkout created by the Women’s March Youth Empower group. The walkout was done to protest congress’ inaction on gun reform. The 17 minutes were done to honor each of the 17 students murdered at the Parkland shooting on February 14. Moving forward, SAUR will be holding a write-a-letter-to-your-congress event this Thursday April 19th (tomorrow) in Muddy from 1pm-4pm. Come join us as we continue to make our voices heard!

On October 7th, 2017 students of SAUR were joined by their fellow peers in taking a knee during Juniata's homecoming football game. Students took a knee to support the movement started by former 49ers quarterback, Colin Kapernick. Kapernick started this movement by taking a knee early in the 2016 NFL season during the national anthem. His motive for doing such was in protest of racial injustice in America. SAUR stands in solidarity and aims to end racial injustice at Juniata College. In light of recent events on campus, SAUR aims to continue dialogue on how to create a safe and comfortable environment for all Juniata students.

Dialogue Across The World: Understanding Each Other's Perspectives

Student leaders in SAUR opened Juniata College to a dialogue between international and domestic students in hopes to explore the international implications of Trump’s presidency.

Thank you to Kati Csoman, Skukura Woods, and Matthew Damschroder for coming out to set up the conversation.

This election has caused campus tentions to highten due to the dangerous and often predatory rhetoric used during this campaign. Many people felt attacked including victims of sexual assault, immigrants and persons with disabilities to name a few. However, just because a person voted for President-Elect Trump doesn't mean they support everything he has said.

The hope for this demonstration was that both Republicans and Democrats alike would feel comfortable uniting with those that were hurt or offended by standing in solidarity.

Juniata is not a campus that accepts hate, but rather supports one another in light of rather than despite our differences.

This was not an anti-anyone event and it was not a protest. It was a stand in demonstration of unity.

Umoja: Juniata College's African American Student Alliance, supported by SAUR and SURJ, held a campus wide lay in. Students laid in front of academic buildings with names of victims of police brutality taped to them. Their bodies were outlined in chalk. The demonstration was open for all to join. Faculty and staff joined at the last building showing their support.

Colin Kaepernick sparked a national conversation on police brutality and race relations in America when he began kneeling during the nation athem at NFL football games. SAUR would like to bring that conversation to Juniata Campus.

As a demonstration SAUR coordinated with students to have a silent protest in order to get the community talking about some issues including:

• Police brutality
• Racial profiling by law enforcement
• Racial divide in Sentencings
• The school to prison pipeline
• Prison labor as the new form of slavery

And the list goes on in the many ways minorities are targeted and oppressed in the United States while the racist system of white supremacy is still being upheld.

The names of victims of violence including police brutality were posted in the stands. By half time some names of victims were torn down.

As a follow up to the demonstration, SAUR will be holding a facilitated disuccsion on Monday October 3 in VLB’s Sill Board Room at 6:30pm. All opinions are welcome.
