Stella missed today’s remarkable mediation. Two folks married over 35 years; separated for 12…He has been forever employed in the plants; she was an accounting clerk for ConocoPhillips. She has been living in an unremediated/unrepaired home since Harvey. He rents a room from a co-worker. In 3.5 hours Suzanne Schwab-Radcliffe and Terry Bacon divided $4.2MM in final resolution; no muss, no fuss, bagged and tagged. Well done Counsel! It all balanced out…Stella would have been impressed.

I was tired, hungry and frankly discouraged. But, great lawyers do great things. Hon. Paula Vlahakos and Patrick Coffey dragged my doubting f***y across the finish line for 2 young folks who did not need to see their lives on trial in the 246th. Well done by both counsel for the benefit of this short term marriage. More hurt feelings than assets. The 246th should owe each of y’all one free setting request of your choice in any pending litigation!

Everyday is not a great day but today was!!! Settled the morning after drifting past 2p… a Mediator’s Proposal on a case that went past 10:30p Tues night and did not settle; adopted the proposal avoiding a Monday trial (thank you for the patient work Sarah Pollard and Andrew Iwata)… then the very nice Chinese/Laotian couple from last week that settled on Temp Orders…reconciled and non-suited❤️ March is off to an excellent start!

Fun and productive week working with excellent lawyers and folks who want to reach resolution. We didn’t always get there but everyone worked hard and when we didn’t get to a settlement we were able to identify where settlement could obtained. I discovered that leaning closer when litigants are speaking Chinese does not make it easier to understand. You can hear it better but it’s still Chinese. Also note to self…when a Chinese native speaker says in English as a second language “she can have anything she wants other than the piano and the metal outdoor furniture” what they mean is if she wants the same things I don’t want.

Always a pleasure to work with excellent lawyers in reaching resolution. Committed work done by all. Had the special pleasure of working for the first time with Judge Cindy Aguirre. I hope to have that opportunity again in the future. Excellent effort by Susan McLerran and MaryBeth Cameron.

Had the pleasure yesterday of working with Rocky Pilgrim, she as amicus in a case we managed resolution on. The parties had older teens, justifiable animosity and distrust. It wasn’t easy but with reasonable compromise and understanding we landed the agreement. Thank you to the opposing counsel, Rocky and the parties for trusting the process. Y’all come see me.
