Something to think about 🤔

Violent Critical Incident (VCI)
Random Acts of Violence (RAV)
Active Shooter (AS)
Or whatever label you put on it.

Are you and your family ready for this? Do you know how to prepare for this? Or are you of the mindset it will not happen to you?

TIPS:
-Be aware of your surroundings, get your nose out of your phone and pay attention

-If something doesn’t feel or look right tell the authorities

-Plan your routes of escape

-Are there places you can hide and barricade?

-How will you counter an attack if needed?

-Have you prepared your kids for a school shooting? If not, why? Even little ones need to be taught what to do.

-Will your kids immediately react to your commands without hesitation or questions?

-Have you ever asked your kids what they are to do if the bad person comes?

-Your safety is your responsibility. Own up to it.

If you find yourself in a VCI, it will be crazy to say the least. Your mind and body will be in over drive, fine motor skills will diminish, tunnel vision will set in, and your thought process will slow down. In order to combat this, we need to have a plan. Any plan is better than no plan. You don’t need to be trained in the ways of the ninja or be a G.I. Joe to prepare for something like this. It just takes you taking your head out of the sand and realizing bad things happen from time to time, and refusing to be a victim when those bad things happen.

For those of us who carry weapons this applies to us as well. Your planning should consist of more than just strapping that gun on and having the mindset of “I see bad guy, I shoot bad guy in the face.” Your gun is just one element to your planning.

Just some thoughts 🤪

Taking guns away 😳!

First, let me say I’m not a big President Trump fan nor am I a Hillary supporter. I’m not a “right wing conservative gun guy” or a “left wing gun grabbing liberal.” I’m a person who is trying to find a middle ground in all the shenanigans! Well here it goes;

President Trump recently made a statement which included the idea of confiscating fi****ms first, then due process second. When he made this statement, I don’t believe his thought process was to take guns away from law abiding citizens who seem to pose zero threat. I think what he was referencing to would be something such as an Extreme Risk Protection Order. In this type of order, there are various ways of restricting people whom law enforcement or family members believe to have violent tendencies. Go to this link below and it will explain what an Extreme Protection Order is.

http://lawcenter.giffords.org/gun-laws/policy-areas/who-can-have-a-gun/extreme-risk-protection-orders/

Now I’m sure folks may cringe at this thought, and some may possibly feel this will turn into the government coming into our homes and taking guns away from citizens who are of sound mind. I for one, typically vote towards the right, and I just don’t have that thought process. Some may say I’m naïve, and maybe I am. As an officer, I choose to believe this is a great tool to help assist us with a person who has a high probability of causing harm to themselves or someone else. As a good citizen, why would I have a problem with the government wanting to do their part in trying to keep guns out of the hands of high risk individuals? Can the government save us from the next mass shooting? NOPE! But why not try? I use this expression a lot, so much so, I drive Amy crazy with it. “The definition of insanity is to continue to do the same thing over and over expecting a different result.” What we’ve been doing isn’t working. I truly feel President Trump is attempting to find a middle ground in all of this. He’s not a gun grabber, he is actually for citizens carrying guns. How do I know this? Because he is wanting to arm teachers, and he is wanting a blanket reciprocity for carry permits for all states. If that’s not “pro gun/2nd Amendment support” then I don’t know what is. On the other hand, he is like minded with Democrats by wanting to do away with bump stocks and increase the age to 21 to buy long guns. To me, that’s a person trying to find a happy medium and work with both sides.

I may not agree with everything President Trump throws out there, but he and I see eye to eye on some of this. Like him, I’m for law abiding citizens owning fi****ms. I’m for people carrying guns (as long as they train they’re responsible with them 😉) He wants to increase the age to buy long guns to 21, and I’m ok with that. He wants to arm teachers. I’m honestly on the fence with that, but I’m still open to it. I just need more details. I can also say that I didn’t agree with everything President Obama proposed while in office. For example, when his administration looked into the idea of stopping the sales of AR-15’s. On one hand I do believe he was on the right track of increased background checks when purchasing guns. Again, is it going to keep all the bad guys from getting guns? No, but it’s something. An increase background check also doesn’t keep law abiding citizens from purchasing guns. So why not be ok with that idea? We have to start opening our minds and stop being so narrowed minded. When we choose to not have an open conversation with the other side, walls are formed. Then we are just like the politicians so many of us say we can’t stand. We can’t say something needs to change, then start complaining about the government when they want to make changes.

Last thought, I promise. I can’t help but think we could possibly be in a better situation if we as individuals would start having the mindset of what will be the best for the masses instead of how gun policy will personally affect us. For example, do I personally feel like I should have to complete a background check to purchase a gun? No, because I know I’m a law abiding citizen. Do I think my 19 year old son should have to wait until he is 21 to buy a long gun? No, because I know I have taught him proper gun safety and he is of sound mind. BUT I do know that to do away with background checks would not be best for the masses, so I’m ok jumping through the hoops of a background check to help keep long guns out of the hands of troubled young people. And so, I would be ok with my son having to wait until he’s 21 to purchase one. In a nutshell, that’s how I look at gun policy. As jacked up as this way of thinking may seem to some of you, this is what keeps me balanced because I know I have a tendency of thinking to the extreme right. Just as some folks think to the extreme left. Either way, both extreme sides cloud logical judgment.

GUN POLICY?

OR

MENTAL HEALTH?

The left would have you believe it’s a gun problem. The right on the other hand, wants you to jump on the mental health bandwagon. This is going to blow some minds, 🤯 but here it goes. What if we work on both? That’s an idea!💡 I also have a third option that I believe will work very well. But I’ll get to that later.

Gun policy: Sure, I’m up for looking into additional gun policies, such as making bump stocks illegal. If they want to increase background checks, I’m ok with that as well. If the government wants to put a limit on how many fi****ms I can buy in a years time, so be it. They can even restrict the quantity of ammo I’m allowed to purchase at any given time. If they want to raise the age to 21 to purchase long guns, I’m ok with that as well. Do away with private purchases and make it mandatory to go through an FFL and a background check for all purchases. This is coming from someone who owns several fi****ms and enjoys shooting. I also teach others how to properly and safely carry and shoot. I guess I don’t get too upset about talks of additional gun policies, because I know I will always have the right to own guns and that will not be taken from me.

Mental Health: This is a major issue in the world. I deal with mentally ill people on a daily basis, and most of the time my hands are tied unless they make a threat to harm themselves or someone else in my presence. There is no doubt we as a nation need to come together and come up with better resources. I wouldn’t mind Missouri looking further into Extreme Risk Protection Orders. This could assist law enforcement with the removal of fi****ms from an individual who is showing signs of violence. There isn’t any doubt in my mind that a person who chooses to carry out a mass attack, has some type of mental issue. I hope we can all agree on that. So we have to address this issue.

Here is the third option I referenced at the beginning of this long drawn out post. What if we locked our schools down? What do I mean by that? It’s really simple. Security features such as security doors which requires a person to be buzzed in, metal detectors, and armed officers in every school. Then we advertise to the world if anyone attempts do do harm to our students, they will be met with lethal force. To have officers in school would not only be good for safety purposes, but it would allow the kids to bond with that officer. And then maybe, just maybe, the kids would be a little more inclined to reach out to that officer if they hear of a problem. The kids are our best resource. It’s amazing how much intel they have. We are not getting anywhere by doing the same things we have done in the past. By the time a road officer receives the call of shots fired and he or she arrives, the attack is usually over and the damage is done. You have no idea how that makes me feel as an officer. To feel helpless, knowing it’s probably going to take me too long to get to that school to help YOUR child. But know this, and I can speak for all the officers I work with, IF we do get there in time, we will end the threat! We have to have trained professionals in our schools! You know why we don’t? The answer is really sad...it comes down to money. Schools say they can’t afford it, and police departments say they can’t afford it. Should we really put a price tag on the safety of our children? Our state better step up and find the money.

Keep in mind, we can implement all three gun policies, mental health training and officers in schools, but that will not prevent someone from trying to pull off one of these attacks. If someone is determined enough, they will find a way. But if we do implement these things, I believe we will decrease the casualty rate.

You and I can post all the propaganda we want, but if we don’t actively do something, nothing will be done. The Florida school shooting will fade away, and we won’t think about it until it happens again. So, what can we do? Simple! Reach out to your local State Representative, Senator and Governor. Express your concerns, and work with them to help come up with ideas, and challenge them to find the money to support these ideas. I have attached a link that will lead you to the home page of our State Reps. Type in your address and your local State Rep will pop up. Reach out to them. I have. Will you?

With the holiday shopping season here I thought I would share some safety tip reminders with you.

-Slow down, try not to get into too big of a hurry. When we hurry, we tend to become careless. This is especially true when driving or walking through parking lots. There will be tons of vehicle and foot traffic in these areas, so SLOW DOWN!!!!

-If you have little ones shopping with you, keep them close. Do not allow them to walk behind you or too far in front of you. The best place for them is at your side or holding onto the shopping cart you are pushing. Make sure you and your child have a plan if you become seperated

-Keep all purses zipped. It’s better to have them hang across your body opposed to hanging off one shoulder

-Do not flash large amounts of cash when paying for items

-Do not get distracted with phone calls and text messages. Continue to keep a watchful eye of the area you are in

-If you become uncomfortable in a situation, contact a store manager/store security or the local police department

-Make sure your cell phone is charged before you leave home

-Pepper spray / Pepper gel on your key ring. Taser in your purse

-From time to time, take bags and packages out to your car and secure them in the trunk so your hands are not full

-Be aware of your surroundings. Know where at least two exits are and routes of escape in every store you enter

-Be confident and look people in the eyes. If you do this, a would be attacker may decide not to choose you as a victim

I had fun in the sun yesterday with the MACLEA recruits at Asymmetric Solutions. We covered more CQB tactics along with Vehicle Defense techniques. I truly hope these recruits continue to train and build on the foundation we and the Asymmetric Solutions Instructors laid for them.
