Before rushing to the part of the harm where we get to move on and leave the past in the past, we have to assess whether the past behaviors are still occurring in the present. The past is only in the past if the person who caused harm has owned up to those behaviors, done the work to repair the harm(s), and demonstrated a pattern of changed behavior. Without all three of these occurring, the past is not just in the past, it’s also in the present and will be in the future until something changes.

I say this with all the love and support in my heart. No two parents are the same. Even parents who are living in one household parent differently. You cannot control your co-parent, and they cannot control you. If your co-parent is not abusing or neglecting the child(ren), there is very little if anything you can do to dictate what happens in another person's home.

There is only so much I as a family law attorney can do to try to dictate how a child is raised in two different households. The law does not provide for such micromanaging and interference. At a certain point, you have to accept that this is your child(ren)'s other parent and learn to deal with it. I am NOT saying, "You chose to have kids with them, so it's your fault," but I AM saying, you can't change the reality that this is your co-parent, so you've gotta find a way to let go a bit and only focus on what you can control, which is yourself.

Anyway, as always, stay safe out there.
