Invitation to Virginia Woodland Owners: Share Your Views on Forest Carbon Programs

The Virginia Tech Forest Economics Group is inviting private woodland owners across Virginia to participate in a survey about forest management effort and forest carbon programs. The survey explores how management activities, program requirements, and other features may influence woodland owners’ interest and participation in these programs.

You do not need to be enrolled in, familiar with, or interested in a forest carbon program to participate. All perspectives are valuable, including those of woodland owners who would not consider joining such a program.

Even if you have previously completed another Virginia Tech survey about forest carbon programs, we encourage you to participate, as this survey focuses on a different aspect of these programs.

When I was an undergraduate, I worked in a campus greenhouse growing eucalyptus seedlings. I shared the greenhouse with a graduate student who was growing nandina for her research.

Although one common name for this plant is heavenly bamboo, it is not a true bamboo.

This plant is problematic, and alternatives or non-fruiting cultivars should be considered.  Please see the suggestions in the left-hand column.

It's parent appreciation day!

These seedlings appreciate their parent trees in the overstory.

In order to perpetuate our hardwood forests in Virginia, we typically rely on natural regeneration. This occurs from seeds or sprouts from stumps of fallen or cut trees.

I learned tree identification in Florida, in the summer. As such, most of my id skills are related to looking at the leaves. But in the winter, other clues are needed to identify deciduous trees (ones that drop their leaves). Bark is one of those clues.

The tree species is this photo has particularly beautiful bark.

Any guesses as to what it is?

Hint: photo was taken in southwest North Carolina.
