Throwback Thursday:
With Father’s Day this weekend, I thought for this week’s post, I would focus there and share one of my favorite photos that I uncovered here in the historical files at HK. Shown here is Jim Schatz, then program manager for the HK G11 project, providing a demonstration to his father of the new weapon before firing, during ACR program testing at Fort Benning.
I am confident many of us recall father and son moments that involve passing on the passion and skill for shooting, but this one strikes a deeper chord personally, as a father and son and ardent HK fan myself. What a joy it must have been for the roles to be reversed and for Jim’s father to be able to be there that day and to see Jim in action, with such a responsibility, and having the ability to has first hand experience on the latest technology intended to be fielded for use by our armed forces. And for Jim, to have such a memory with his father. Life is about memories and moments and those we get to share them with. I’m so thankful that through a faded photograph, I got to witness another.

Throwback Thursday:
When the GSG 9 stood up in 1972, they turned to Heckler and Koch to outfit them with the latest fi****ms necessary to conduct their new counter terror missions. Here we see new product training on their HK P9S pistols. With their fixed barrels and roller delayed blowback operation, modified from the MP5, these pistols remain some of the most accurate and soft recoiling semiautomatic pistols from period. These would continue to service until being replaced by the HK P7 at the end of the decade.

This day each year we reflect on the life of Jim Schatz. A son, husband, Airborne soldier, leader, advocate, friend and mentor, as well as a driving force behind many of the military programs within the United States for Heckler and Koch.
Having the great opportunity to work with Heckler and Koch on the creation of the four-volume set of the Vickers Guide Heckler and Koch book series, I was able to dig through stacks of historical files and uncover a series of incredible photos of Jim throughout the years, including several taken during a promotional shoot as part of the submission of the MP5K-PDW to satisfy a US Special Operations request for a personal defense weapon. This image, which I believe to be previously unreleased, is an example of the man, the program he led and his drive for providing the best weapon solutions to our Nation’s military.
His impact, continues to extend well beyond his years.
