A lot of people think practicing law is all about being in the courtroom.

But most days, it looks like this - sitting at a desk, reviewing medical records, interviewing witnesses, drafting demand letters, and preparing for depositions.

It may not be flashy, but this behind the scenes work is what leads to the best results for our clients.

Okun Law is proud to sponsor Maine State Bar Association's 135 Anniversary Gala

The Maine bar works best when we stay connected, and when we show up for each other. This event does both, while also supporting civil legal aid for Mainers who need it most.

Proud to be part of it.

🎉 We’re excited to share the full list of sponsors for the MSBA’s 135th Anniversary Gala & Silent Auction!

A special thank-you to our newest President’s Circle supporters: Jonathan Dunitz (2024), Robert Hirshon (1986), David Levesque (2015), and Hon. Stephen Nelson (2016), for their generous support.

We’re so grateful to everyone helping make this milestone celebration possible, and we look forward to celebrating together on May 15 in Portland!

Okun Law is proud to support the MSBA’s 135th Anniversary Gala & Silent Auction as an Advocate sponsor.

As I help lead this year’s inaugural gala celebration, I’m especially grateful to the sponsors who are stepping up with me to support an evening that benefits the Campaign for Justice and the Maine Justice Foundation, organizations that are essential to ensuring access to justice across Maine.

Through my pro bono work with the Volunteer Lawyers Project, I have the privilege of seeing firsthand how funding for civil legal aid providers translates directly into representation for low-income individuals and families who would otherwise face the legal system alone.

The strength of our profession is measured not just by advocacy in the courtroom, but by our commitment to justice beyond it.

I look forward to celebrating 135 years of the MSBA with friends and colleagues on May 15 at Grace!

If you or your organization would like to sponsor the event or donate an auction item, I welcome you to join us in advancing access to justice in Maine.

We’re excited to welcome new sponsors to the MSBA’s 135th Anniversary Gala & Silent Auction:

Justice Champion: Spruce Mountain Wealth Partners
Leadership Circle: Verrill Dana
Partner: Berman & Simmons

They join our original sponsors in supporting this special evening on May 15 at Grace in Portland — featuring chef-curated food stations, live music, and cocktails as we celebrate 135 years of the MSBA. The evening will also include a silent auction benefiting the Campaign for Justice and the Maine Justice Foundation in support of access to justice in Maine.

Learn more about sponsoring or donating an auction item at mainebar.org. And mark your calendars for May 15!

A client sent us a fruit and cheese box to say thank you after we resolved her case. While her injuries weren’t catastrophic, the outcome mattered greatly to her, and we worked her case with the same diligence and care we bring to every client, regardless of the size or type of injury.

We don’t do this work for recognition, but we’re deeply grateful for the trust our clients place in us and for gestures like this that remind us why we do what we do.

Thank you for the kindness. It truly means a lot. 💙

As many of you know, I recently took over as President of the Maine State Bar Association. I have been feeling a bit disconnected lately, both in my personal and professional life, and given the state of the world, I can only imagine that others must feel the same way too. I want to find ways for us to reconnect with each other, and I think one of the ways for us to do that is to remember our history.

2026 marks 135 years since the MSBA was created, which means we have all been through a lot together, we have a lot of memories, and we have a lot of stories to tell. I invite the Maine legal community to share your stories, photographs, and reflections. Selected stories will be featured in the Spring 2026 edition of the Maine Bar Journal.

When I reflect on the history of the MSBA, I can only imagine the collective stories out there, waiting to be told, and as we celebrate this milestone year, I think it's time we tell them. You can find the details on how to share your stories in the attached Maine Bar Journal article, but feel free to reach out to me with any questions.

Most people don’t realize this, but injured Mainers are often being charged more than the law allows just to access their own medical records.

Thank you to NEWS CENTER Maine for highlighting a story today regarding a class-action lawsuit filed over alleged overcharging by medical-record companies.
👉 Read the article here: https://www.newscentermaine.com/article/news/local/courts-news/class-action-lawsuit-filed-medical-records-data-management-health-care-providers/97-d9e39f8f-6a15-441e-a7d3-d49b9394ba3e

Okun Law is not part of the lawsuit, but as a personal injury law firm, we deal with this problem every single day.

Our clients need timely, affordable access to their medical records so we can prove their injuries and move their cases forward. Yet third-party vendors often add extra “technology” or “platform” fees that go beyond what Maine law allows.

This creates delays, increases costs, and makes an already stressful situation even harder for injured Mainers.

In 2024, Attorney Okun testified before the Maine Legislature against raising medical-record copying fees, because protecting injured clients is something we care deeply about, and will continue to fight for.

We are grateful to consumer protection attorney John Steed for bringing this lawsuit. It’s important that people know their rights and understand what the law actually allows.

Please feel free to share - the more people understand this issue, the more pressure there is for companies to follow the law.

A class-action lawsuit claims health care providers and data companies overcharged Mainers for their own digital medical records.

Congratulations to our founder, Rachel Okun!

We’re proud to share that Rachel Okun has been selected as a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation (ABF), an honor extended to less than 1% of lawyers nationwide.

The American Bar Foundation Fellows recognize attorneys whose careers exemplify excellence, integrity, leadership, and dedication to the advancement of justice.

Rachel’s commitment to serving her clients and community continues to inspire everything we do at Okun Law. Her induction as an ABF Fellow reflects the very values our firm was built on: compassionate advocacy, ethical leadership, and a deep respect for the rule of law.

At a time when the rule of law is increasingly tested, this recognition is a reminder of why we do what we do: to protect the rights of our clients and strengthen faith in justice for all Mainers.
