New signs installed today on the front of Roth LAW Office 10 North Main Ellinwood, Kansas 67526. I purchased the building in 1997 from Mildred Hartenbower. She and her late husband ran the Tip Top Cleaners dry cleaning business out of this location. Louie Hartenbower who passed away in 1989 also ran a record shop in the basement when I was growing up in Ellinwood. Prior to the Hartenbower ownership William L. Southern and Mabel F. Southern starting around 1924 operated a dry cleaning upstairs and Flower Shop in basement; the location had previously been a Brewery and Cigar Store operated by John Hess starting in 1877. A fire in 1887 destroyed the wood buildings on the block facing east. Thereafter, the City passed an ordinance requiring brick be used to rebuild. A new store front, with higher quality bricks, was installed in 1938.
The initial proposed improvement project was for Quality Glass, LLC a licensed Barton County Contractor, to replace the front windows with energy efficient double pained four and one half (4 1/2') inch wide windows and the boarded over windows above the two (2) front doors would have stained glass inserted which would be viewable from the inside and outside of the building.
After submitting the matching grant application, I was advised the County Commission was interested in a greater improvement in the appearance of the business. The grant was then supplemented to include Mark's Custom Signs a licensed Barton County Contractor to cover over two (2) 33" by 87" signs advertising no longer going concerns with historical images illustrating Ellinwood: "Where the Santa Fe Trail Intersects the Cox Cattle Trail."
The Santa Fe Trail 1821 to 1880 angled across the present townsite of Ellinwood, what is now the Grove Park Golf Course was a favorite campground.
The Cox Cattle Trail was an offshoot of the Chisholm Trail. As Rail Tracks were constructed west across Kansas, Texas Long Horn Cattle would be driven from Texas to the nearest rail station for loading at Abilene, then Ellsworth and eventually Dodge City. The survey by the Kansas Pacific Railway Company was led by William M. Cox the general livestock agent for the railroad. His route near Ellinwood from the mid-1860s until 1873, saved the cattle drovers about 35 miles. The Cox Cattle Trail crossed the Arkansas River at Ellinwood before making its way to Ellsworth.

The Ellinwood Rotary Club, in cooperation with the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce, is in the process of organizing the AHF parade to be held Saturday, July 17, 2021, at 10 a.m. Lineup will begin at 9 a.m. on Santa Fe/Park Street on the west edge of Ellinwood.
The Ellinwood Rotary Club and the Ellinwood Chamber of Commerce are celebrating 200 years of history on the Santa Fe Trail this year with an After Harvest Festival parade theme of "Hittin' the Trail." Saddle up your pony and bring your buggies and wagons and join us for a rip-roaring good time on the Santa Fe Trail in Ellinwood!
Ellinwood Rotary started selecting a theme for the parade in 1991 to help celebrate or recognize special events or personalities and help create a focal point for the After Harvest Festival. All parade entrants are encouraged to incorporate the theme into their float, if possible.
Certificates will be given in the following categories:
All Around, Antique Tractor, Most Original, Theme, Youth, Religious, Antique Cars, Classic Vehicle, Antique Truck, Commercial, Class Reunion
Entry forms may be obtained online at www.ellinwoodchamber.com/parade-entry or by email [email protected] or call 620-566-1054. Entry form deadline is July 9, 2021.
Nothing is to be thrown from an entry; however, individuals may walk alongside and hand out items such as candy, water, etc. to spectators. Foul language will not be tolerated. Fireworks are prohibited, and loud noise-makers are to be avoided so as not to frighten any animals in the parade. In addition, we emphasize strongly that alcoholic beverages are NOT to be consumed during the parade.

Over 98% of the Corn Producers I signed up have received the first of their two (2) settlement checks. Even thought it has been over seven (7) years since China put an embargo on all US produced corn, I have seen no expense reimbursement or fee. Truly in a Class Action of this size, the wheels of justice move slowly, but grind an exceedingly fine dust.

I live in the home I was born and raised in by loving parents. Grew up the youngest of four (4) boys in this small central Kansas town. Quarterbacked a league championship football team while qualifying for debate at State. Lettered in golf all four (4) years. Took the advantages of a small town high school for granted. Culture shock when I arrived at University of Kansas and would see more students when I walked to class each morning than attended my High School. Went on to Washburn University at Topeka law school. Enjoy defending the constitutional rights of the powerless. Won after 15 minutes of deliberations my last jury trial of over three dozen during my 40 years a Kansas Trial Lawyer. Use to feel great when a client found not guilty, now I just like closing files and moving on to the next case.
