“October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. We do not have an awareness problem. We have an action problem.

We know domestic violence can escalate. We know many high-risk offenders leave warning signs. We know lethality assessment, strong investigations, information sharing, and multidisciplinary intervention can help us identify danger. The question is whether we are willing to change the way we work.

For those of us in leadership, October should cause us to take a hard look at how our organizations actually respond to domestic violence, not at what our policies say we do, but what happens at 2:00 in the morning when a deputy or officer responds to a domestic violence call.

Are we identifying the victims most at risk?
Are we using a validated lethality assessment, and doing something with the information it gives us?
Are our investigators looking beyond the incident in front of them and investigating the pattern of violence, coercion, stalking, strangulation, threats, and escalating behavior?

And perhaps most importantly, are we talking to each other?
