Product Availability Update!

I have some good news. Product availability has been at a standstill since Shapeways filed for bankruptcy, I have decided to start producing some of the parts myself. I have a few different FDM printers and a range of materials. If you are in need or interested in a rapid_slot part, please send a request through messenger. Thank you!

Another big announcement! Since my local commercial slot car raceway went out of business more than two years ago, I’ve had nowhere to test and develop new products. I recently installed an 80’ routed wood 4-lane track in my basement. It has 4.0” lane spacing which will allow me to run both 1/24 and 1/32 scale. Plus, there is a LapMaster timing system which will allow me to track the progress. The track is a lot of fun, I forgot how much I dig slot car racing. I already have a few new items in the works. 😉

Product availability announcement:

As of July 2024 Shapeways, my supplier for “MultiJet Fusion” 3D printed parts has filed for bankruptcy and ceased production. I’m currently looking at alternate suppliers or possibly producing the components myself.

I apologize for the inconvenience, and I thank you for your support!

A huge thanks for everybody has purchased or is planning on purchasing a set of the light weight pans! Much appreciated!

Just a friendly reminder, hardware is not included. I’ve been getting a lot questions in regards to hardware, this is what I’ve been using and recommend. Please see build instructions below.

For the body mount pin tubes I use either of these:
ARP aluminum body mounts # ARPBPM https://e-slotcar.com/chassis-and-chassis-parts/chassis-parts/arp-body-pin-mounts-arp-bpm/
JK pin tube kit # U63 https://jkproducts.com/other/2256-u63-6.html

For the ”bite-bar” most .050” dia. thin wall stainless steel tubing will work, this is what I’ve been using (on the Aeolos the front bar needs to be cut to length):
Koford .050" Stainless Steel Pin Tube # M259 https://e-slotcar.com/koford-050-stainless-steel-pin-tubes-6-pack-kof-m259/

To retain the bite-bar to the pan body pins are required, I prefer these:
Koford Short Big Head Pro Body Pins # M545 https://e-slotcar.com/koford-short-big-head-pro-body-pins-kof-m545/

Build tips:

1. Test fit all parts prior to assembly.

2. The holes for the bite-bar and pin-tubes might require removal of residual support material left over from the post 3d-printing part cleaning process (the support material is in powder form). I apologize in advance if this is the case, I’m working with the supplier (Shapeways) to put quality checks in place as this did not become a concern until after I had made dozens of test pans and had already released these items to the public, I appreciate your understanding.

a. If there are any obstructions in the bite-bar holes I recommend using a small piece of piano wire (.032"-047" dia.) and try to push it through the hole with light force to remove support material. Compressed air helps remove the powder material as well.

b. If method (a) is unsuccessful. A piece of .050” dia. s/steel tubing cut to about 2” long (same material as recommended for the bite-bars) can be used to “ream” the holes free of support material. Apply a sharp edge to one end of the tubing (with a cut-off wheel or sand paper), then chuck the tubing into a Dremel. At low-rpm proceed to lightly ream out the holes in a drilling motion, it should only take a few seconds to clean out the holes.

3. Pin-Tubes: Retained with a small drop of CA glue (super glue). I typically push the pin-tube in about half half way then place a small drop of glue on the exposed tube then push it in all the way and allow to dry.

4. Bite-Bar: Retained by two body pins.

Here is something new from rapid_slot! This is an option part for the 1/24 scale stamped steel chassis (aka flexi-car) crowd.

These are a lighter, more durable alternative to an aluminum pan. This project came about after having to straighten aluminum pans on almost a weekly basis after a few months getting back into racing, caused sometimes by even minor track incidents. Not wanting to go back to the much heavier steel pan I figured there has to be another lightweight solution just short of eliminating the pans all together. This was also an opportunity to incorporate some new design features to help the cars handle better on the high speed banked tracks. An optional forward body mount provision was added, as well as two tabs at the back of the pan, closer to the rear axle to transfer downforce directly to the center section. With the first prototypes I experimented with several types of 3D printing (FDM, SLA, SLS and MJF) and several materials (PLA, ABS, PETG, Carbon Fiber and Nylon). After months of testing I’ve come to the conclusion that PA12, 3D printed on Multi Jet Fusion machine had the best balance of performance / cost. My original intent was to only provide pans to the local Thursday night flexi racers at my home raceway but after word got out I’ve been getting a ton of requests to make these available to the public. As of right now these are not USRA legal but it appears that some of the independent racing bodies are interested and willing to make an exception, please contact your local race director for clarification.

They will be available for direct purchase from my Shapeway site (see link below for pricing and additional product information). Discounts will be available to commercial raceways, please send a message for pricing. At this point parts are made to order so please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

I would like to give a huge thanks to the Thursday night racers @ Downriver Speedway for helping me develop and test these parts! And thank you for visiting!

rapid_slot 916sr "spec racer" chassis update:

The first 916sr prototypes arrived from Shapeways yesterday! I'll be building up two test mules. The first one is printed from PA2200 nylon "polished red plastic" and the second car is printed from Alumide "polished metal plastic" (the 3D printing process for both is SLS). The Alumide material has a density approximately 50% greater and is noticeably stiffer than the PA2200. I'm waiting on some hardware and misc slot car parts to arrive in the next few days so I can proceed with the builds.

Stay tuned, more updates to follow!

This is the first of several exciting new products coming down the rapid_slot development pipeline (Look for a 1/32 scale chassis in the very near future as well, currently in the design stage). I’ve stepped away for a while to focus on family life and it’s time to get back at it. Thank you for your support!
