While joint accounts are useful tools within an estate plan, they shouldn't be the only tool.
Advantages include the immediate transfer of assets, avoidance of probate, simplified management, and may provide some tax benefits.
Disadvantages can include loss of control, exposure to creditors or lawsuits, complications especially with blended families, medicare, gift tax, estate tax, and step-up in basis issues.

In 2013, I bought 25 pens inscribed “Law Offices of Heather Paul” and began to dream of opening my own firm. At the time I was working for a Fortune 50 brokerage firm and wasn’t allowed to practice on my own. But, I’ve kept a couple of those pens over the years as a constant reminder not to give up on my dream.

While I had a good job working in the compliance and legal departments bringing in a steady paycheck, that wasn’t enough and that wasn’t what I wanted for myself or for my boys. I knew I had more to give and more to do. I wanted to do the things that I thought were important like helping people create their legacy, protect their assets and provide a better life for their children and grandchildren.

I believe there are four pillars to financial success - financial planning, tax, real estate, and estate planning. With 25 years of experience in the financial services industry I have expertise in aspects of each of these areas with a special passion for estate planning and real estate, which I believe go hand in hand.

In January 2024, I retired from the financial services industry and made the decision to go out on my own, launching a career in real estate and, most importantly, creating my baby, my dream… my very own estate planning law firm.

I am beyond thrilled today to announce the official opening of the Law Offices of Heather Paul, LLC, doing business as Monument Estate Planning.
