I enjoyed spending the past several days with lots of fellow mediators from across the state at the Texas Association of Mediators conference. It was an honor to be asked to be part of the plenary panel on Saturday alongside Diane Harvey, Gary Clayton, Jeff Jury, and Pattie Porter.

Here's a little trivia for Texas Independence Day.

Do you know why Texas Longhorns are referred to as tea-sippers or t-sips?

There are various theories out there, but I think it's all because of Texas Independence Day. In 1896, a group of students at UT Austin who wanted the day off began petitioning to make it a school holiday. Out of their shenanigans, traditions were born.

The president of the university was quoted as saying, "I was born in the land of liberty, rocked in the cradle of liberty, nursed on the bottle of liberty, and I've had liberty preached to me all my life, but Texas University students take more liberty than anyone I've ever come in contact with."

While students aren't given the day off at UT, there are large celebrations on campus and there's a big one of the steps of the main mall under the tower where people eat cake and drink TEA!

As an ungrad at UT, I was a proud member of the March 2nd committee that helped plan each year's events. I have so many fond memories of eating cake and sipping tea on a beautiful spring day in Austin. Happy Texas Independence Day!

I am very much looking forward to being a part of the 2026 Texas delegation to Mongolia. It is an honor to be part of this program that's been working hard with the Mongolian judiciary and lawyers for the past 30 years to evolve their legal system.

MEET THE TX26 DELEGATION: Attorney-Mediator Sharon Corsentino

My name is Sharon Corsentino and I am thrilled to be part of the 2026 Mongolian Delegation. I am a lawyer with a practice focused on alternative dispute resolution, including arbitration and mediation, and I also serve as one of the newest adjunct faculty members at Texas A&M School of Law. My interest in cross-cultural exchange and comparative systems of government began early in life, most notably when I participated in a student exchange program in Germany during a pivotal moment in history as the Eastern Bloc was dismantling and Europe was undergoing profound transformation. That experience sparked a lasting fascination with how legal systems evolve alongside democratic institutions. I look forward to collaborating closely with fellow members of the delegation to share insights into the U.S. legal system as Mongolia continues to strengthen and refine its own. I believe the rule of law is foundational to effective governance, and I am deeply inspired by the Spurlock Judicial Foundation’s three decades of impactful work in Mongolia. #

Hope you’re staying safe and warm while we wait for the big thaw.

With courthouses closed for two days, a backlog of hearings is inevitable and rescheduling may take longer than expected. Mediation offers a faster, flexible path to resolution when court dates are hard to come by.

We still have limited February availability for half-day, six-hour, and full-day mediations. Already settled but stuck waiting on the courthouse to reopen? You can also book a quick “drive-by” mediation to lock in your agreement and keep things moving.

Don’t let winter slow your cases down. Reach out to reserve a date while spots are still open.

Ice and snow may have shut down the courthouses in our area, but things were still rocking along over here on Zoom. I was so happy to help parties resolve their case today while we all stayed toasty and safe at home.

Stay warm, everyone!
