Before you file, here’s something many notaries don’t realize…
📌 Notarization fees are exempt from Self-Employment tax.
This means the income you earn specifically for performing notarizations may not be subject to the 15.3% self-employment tax.
The problem?
Many tax preparers don’t know this rule and file all notary income the same way — which can cause notaries to pay more in taxes than they should.
As someone who is notary and signing agent, I understand how to properly handle things like:
✔️ Separating notary fees vs signing service income
✔️ Mileage, printing, and supply deductions
✔️ Schedule C reporting for signing agents
✔️ The notary self-employment tax exemption
