You translate lawyer-speak into human language, track down documents and signatures like a CSI detective, and somehow bring calm-ish to the chaos. We (as well as our clients) are forever grateful for you! Thank you for braving the fires of family law alongside us. You’re the real MVP!!!

Our team headed to Hunt County, Texas today to represent a client in the throws of a nasty divorce for a temporary orders and temporary restraining order hearing. A temporary orders hearing is to determine how the parties should act while a family law case is still pending - issues like temporary spousal support, temporary payment of attorneys fees, who stays in the house, and who pays what debts are common focal points. A temporary restraining order revolves around “negative relief” or telling a party to not do something. For example, a court can restrain parties from selling assets, speaking inappropriately to each other, and even coming too close to each other.

Leading up to the hearing, we prepared materials with our client, reviewed hundreds of documents in discovery, researched some nuanced areas of the law, and drafted questions to meet our burden. We take pride in working with our clients and utilizing a collaborative approach to really understand the facts and emotions. Congratulations to and for being selected to the 2025 Super Lawyers list! This is Carmen’s thirteenth year to receive the recognition and Whitney’s fourth year, in addition to being selected to Rising Stars for the six years prior. Carmen and Whitney pride themselves in being fierce but empathetic advocates for their family law clients. They are driven by compassion and work diligently to execute their strategies, whether that be in court, at mediation, or inside a conference room. This is an honor that less than 2.5% of lawyers receive and we are proud to have them leading our team!

Really interesting write-up on AI from and in the Headnotes. Big take away: artificial intelligence often complicates the attorney-client relationship and it’s also no replacement for human legal advice. While AI can be useful for creating summaries or even provide a starting point for things like deposition outlines or witness questions, it’s still super important that an actual attorney review and cross check all material.

Without getting political here, this is probably one of the highest profile divorces happening in Texas. Angela Paxton cited “biblical grounds” for her divorce. Fun fact: there’s no such thing in Texas. The only fault based grounds for divorce in our state are: (1) adultery; (2) cruelty; (3) conviction of felony; (4) abandonment; (5) living apart (although this seems more like a no-fault ground); or (6) confinement in a mental hospital. Which one do you think she’s divorcing him for?

What an amazing opportunity today to present a course to educators in the DFW area! MAJOR KUDOS to Katie Anderson for putting together a thoughtful, relevant, and interesting program to inform schools about various areas of law that may impact their day-to-day. Our family law partner, Whitney Green, had the privilege to discuss the intersection of family law and the education system. Other colleagues at Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal, LLP did a phenomenal job in their areas of expertise as well, including Cathy Lilford Altman (construction), Bonnie Barksdale & LaCrecia Perkins (real estate issues), Andrea Perez (copyright/art law), and Katie Anderson & Shelby Taylor (school and employment law).
