Most people don’t wake up and choose medical malpractice law. It’s hard, it’s emotional, and the system doesn’t exactly make it easy to hold anyone accountable.
In this short segment from Episode 1 of AdvoKAYte: Holding Healthcare Accountable, Kay Van Wey shares why she got into this work—and why she stayed even after Texas tort reform in 2003 pushed so many patient-side attorneys out.
She talks about what it really takes to go “toe-to-toe” with medical experts, why accountability can disappear when no one is willing (or able) to take these cases, and the mindset that carried her through the fights people told her she’d never win:
“Don’t look at your feet… just dance.”
If you’ve ever wondered why Kay started AdvoKAYte—and what drives her to keep pushing for patient safety—this is a powerful listen.

The warning signs were there.
Catastrophic patient outcomes.
Doctors raising concerns.
Hospitals choosing silence.
The Dr. Death case wasn’t just about one dangerous surgeon. It exposed systemic failures that still put patients at risk today.
On AdvoKAYte: Holding Healthcare Accountable, Kay Van Wey breaks down what hospitals ignored, why accountability failed, and what patients need to know to protect themselves.
This podcast is about more than cases. It’s about transparency, patient safety, and demanding a healthcare system that puts people over profits.

Not every medical injury is unavoidable — and not every “complication” should be accepted at face value.

This carousel breaks down what can count as a preventable medical error, including misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, birth injuries, and surgical mistakes. If something about your care doesn’t sit right, trust that instinct.

If you need help understanding what happened, the team at Van Wey & Metzler Law is here to listen.

If you’ve ever left a doctor’s office or hospital thinking, “Wait… that didn’t feel right,” please don’t talk yourself out of it.
When something goes wrong medically, it can be confusing and overwhelming — and most people aren’t sure what they’re “allowed” to ask for next. You are allowed to ask. You are allowed to get answers. And you are allowed to protect yourself or the person you love.
This carousel walks through simple, practical steps: what to document, what questions to ask, when to get a second opinion, and how to take action if you suspect medical negligence.
Save this for later (because you never think you’ll need it… until you do).

And if you’re in the middle of this right now, you don’t have to navigate it alone. 🤍

“True reform of our dangerous healthcare system is going to have to come from within. Doctors and nurses are going to have to be the ones to say ENOUGH.” — Kay Van Wey

Behind every unsafe practice is a patient who trusted the system — and a family who deserved better. Real change happens when people speak up and put patient safety first.
If something about your medical care doesn’t sit right, trust that feeling. And if you need help understanding what happened, you don’t have to figure it out alone.

Most people have heard the name Dr. Death.
But what most people don’t know is how he was allowed to keep operating.

That’s why AdvoKAYte exists.

This podcast isn’t about headlines or hype, but it’s about the patients who were harmed, the systems that failed them, and what all of us need to know to stay safe.

If you’ve ever trusted a doctor…
If you’ve ever sat in a hospital waiting room…
This matters to you.

Some messages really stop us in our tracks—in the best way. 🤍
Natasha Diemer (a fellow advocate in this work) shared this about Kay:
“From our first interaction she demonstrated what an incredible advocate she is for victims in medical malpractice in Texas. I highly recommend Kay Van Wey and her firm…”

Kay doesn’t take that trust lightly. Every case we handle represents a real person, a real family, and a moment that changed everything. Our promise is simple: we’ll listen, we’ll dig for the truth, and we won’t back down.

Thank you, Natasha, for seeing the heart behind the work.

Harris County is home to the world’s largest medical center, yet Black mothers are dying from pregnancy-related causes at a rate of 83.4 per 100,000 live births. (2016–2020)

Many of these deaths were preventable.

So let’s be honest about what this is:

This isn’t a knowledge problem.

This isn’t a resource problem. This is a systems + accountability problem.

And WE—patients, families, friends cannot normalize this.

If you’re pregnant or supporting someone who is:
✅bring an advocate to appointments
✅ask questions until you get clear answers
✅trust your gut when something feels off
✅document symptoms and concerns

Share this. Talk about it. Demand better.

What’s one change you want to see hospitals make immediately to protect Black mothers?

“Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.”- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
For us, we embody this principle in our work. Seeking justice without compassion is hollow.
Words without action are meaningless. Love for our neighbors means showing up for patients
whose lives have been destroyed by a preventable medical error. Showing up means bringing our
skill, expertise and compassion to the battle. That’s our love language!

“They gave us light in a very dark time.”
Testimonials like this mean everything to us.
We’re honored to share these words from a family we walked alongside during a difficult journey:
“Luke Metzler was upfront, knowledgeable, and someone we trusted completely. Steve Waldman became our lifeline — guiding us every step of the way. We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who saw our case through. We can’t recommend this firm enough; they will take care of you and your family.”
At Van Wey & Metzler, we’re here not just as attorneys — but as advocates when families need support the most.

If you believe medical negligence changed your life, we’re here to help.

🎉 Happy Birthday, Luke Metzler! 🎉
Luke is the kind of guy who can:
✅ walk into a case with 10,000 pages of records and somehow find the detail that matters
✅ go toe-to-toe with powerful hospitals (without breaking a sweat)
✅ still be the steady, “we’ve got this” energy in the office
He’s been fighting for injured patients and families since 2011—especially in the toughest medical malpractice and birth injury cases—and he does it with equal parts brains, grit, and heart.

Today, we’re celebrating the person behind the work!
