If yesterday’s post got you thinking about fairness vs. equality in inheritance planning, a longer version is now up on my website.
It breaks down why this question is more complicated than it seems, why so many families struggle with it, and how clear communication can prevent conflict down the road.
If you’re heading into holiday conversations and want a deeper look at the issues, you can read it here:

As we head into the holidays, I always see the same question pop up in my estate planning meetings:
“Should all my kids get an equal inheritance?”

Some families have one child who’s been the caregiver… another who’s struggled financially… another who’s thriving but would still feel hurt being “left out.” And parents often feel torn between fairness and equality which are two very different things.

What I tell my clients is this:
The biggest gift you can give your family isn’t the division of assets.
It’s clarity and communication.

Most family conflicts after a parent’s death don’t come from the money itself- they come from the surprise.
If you’re starting to think about these questions (or planning to have a conversation around Thanksgiving), here are a few good places to start:
• What do you value most: fairness, equality, or something else?
• Have you helped any of your kids financially during your lifetime?
• If distributions will be unequal, do you want your kids to understand why?
• Should any part of your estate go into a trust to prevent future issues?
• What would bring your family the most peace long-term?

If you ever want to talk through your situation or just aren’t sure where to begin, I’m always happy to help.
Holiday conversations don't have to be heavy. They just have to be honest.
