We're getting to that time of year when every new tropical system starts getting our attention. 🌀

That doesn't mean it's time to panic or run out and buy everything on the shelves.

It DOES mean it's a good time to pay attention and take care of the easy things before everyone else is doing the same thing.

Fill up the car. Check your supplies. Charge your power banks. Know your evacuation plan. And most importantly, get your storm information from trusted sources.

A little preparation now means a lot less scrambling later.

Power outages are one of the most common challenges after a hurricane.

If your electricity goes out while you're away, or even overnight—it can be difficult to know whether your freezer stayed cold enough to keep your food safe.

That's why this simple "coin in the freezer" trick is worth doing before a storm is in the forecast. It takes less than two minutes and gives you a better idea of whether your freezer thawed during an outage.

While it's not a replacement for food safety guidelines, it's a helpful way to check if your freezer may have lost power long enough for the ice to melt and refreeze.
