Douglass Law, PLLC is a local, community-focused law firm dedicated to helping individuals, families, and small businesses navigate some of life’s most important decisions with clarity and confidence. We believe legal support should feel human, grounded in respect, honesty, and a genuine commitment to protecting what matters most to you. At our firm, we foc

us on the areas of law that directly impact everyday life and long-term stability. This includes estate planning, probate and guardianship matters, family law, small-business formation, and disputes. Whether you’re planning for the future, facing a difficult transition, or trying to keep your business running smoothly, we’re here to help you move forward with peace of mind. Our founder, Jennifer Douglass, has spent more than 15 years serving the Lewis-Clark Valley. She brings deep experience in family law, estate matters, and business planning representation, and she is licensed in both Idaho and Washington. Clients value her calm, steady presence, her long history of community service, and her ability to navigate complex situations with both strategic skill and genuine compassion. Our approach is simple: listen first, understand fully, and guide you with clarity. We know that legal issues often show up during stressful or emotional times, so we take the time to make sure you feel heard, supported, and informed at every step. Our work is trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and rooted in treating every client with dignity. We aim to give you not just legal answers, but a sense of stability and direction when you need it most. People choose Douglass Law because they want an advocate who is both caring and capable, someone who can explain the law in plain language, protect their rights, and stand by them through difficult decisions. With our combination of local experience, practical insight, and a client-centered philosophy, we provide representation that is both personal and effective.

Today, we pause to honor the heroes who gave everything for our freedom.

From our team at Douglass Law PLLC to yours, we take this moment to recognize the brave men and women who served and sacrificed to protect what matters most.

Their courage, dedication, and selflessness shaped the country we live in today.

Memorial Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of the lives behind the freedoms we so often take for granted.

We remember the families who carry the weight of that sacrifice, and we honor the legacy of every soldier who never made it home.

To those who served and to those who continue to serve, thank you. Your strength inspires us every single day.

May we never forget, and may we always live in a way that honors their memory.

Writing your wishes on a piece of paper does not make them legally binding.

A real will has strict requirements, and a handwritten note almost never meets them. Without proper signatures and witnesses, courts can reject it entirely.

Witnessing matters more than people realize. In most cases, you need qualified, neutral witnesses present at the time of signing, otherwise the document can be ruled invalid.

Handwritten instructions often leave too much room for interpretation. Vague wording creates confusion, and confusion creates disputes between family members.

A proper will also includes key legal elements many notes leave out. Things like naming an executor, backup beneficiaries, and what happens if someone passes before you.

If you’ve ever made a will before, a handwritten note usually does not replace it. That can result in multiple documents fighting each other in probate.

Informal notes are also much easier to challenge. Unhappy relatives can question authenticity, intent, or whether pressure was involved.

Courts also look at capacity and free will. A piece of paper provides no proof that decisions were made clearly and voluntarily.

All of this leads to delays, conflict, and unnecessary legal costs for the people you care about most.

ADOPTIONS! Anne Dwelle, who retired at the end of the year, has been working with our office to transition her adoption practice to us, including Idaho District 2 foster to adopt. We limit our fees to the reimbursement from the state and we have her as the best mentor we could ask for, on the group text. These cases crack our hearts wide open in the best ways. Yes, lawyers occasionally test positive for a heart beat. 💕

A lot of people come back from cancer treatment and it’s the push to quit something they had already outgrown, whether they knew it or not. They change careers or relationships or locations. This is valid. All I see is that I wouldn’t change a thing. My family and friends have prioritized me at every turn. Everyone at this office rose to the occasion and reminded me that I love what we do and I love what we stand for. Happy Holidays and blessings on the right path, with all of its imperfections. - Jen

Update: Jen is cancer free and returning to the office in September. Future absences will be shorter. Thank you for your patience, thoughts and prayers! 💕

Over the last half of the summer, Douglass Law will be experiencing a short disruption. I was recently diagnosed with very early, very treatable breast cancer and I have opted for aggressive treatment. I have fantastic care, great support and all will be well, but I am asking for some grace in the meantime. Erin, Jack and Danielle will be working together to handle all of our cases and take care of each client. Our clerks, judges and opposing counsel have been notified. Letters are in the mail to clients with active cases. We are organized, prepared and we’ve got you.

And I’ve got this.

~Jennifer
