New Balance has filed a federal trademark infringement lawsuit against Decathlon, alleging that the logo used on certain Kiprun running shoes is confusingly similar to its longstanding “N” trademarks.

Here’s where the Trademark Tea gets interesting: Decathlon maintains that its design represents a “K,” while New Balance argues that when the logo is mirrored on the opposite side of the shoe, it looks unmistakably like an “N.”New Balance says it raised concerns with Decathlon months before filing the lawsuit.

The company also points to the strength and history of its branding, alleging that variations of its recognizable “N” have appeared on its footwear for nearly 50 years. The complaint even references social media discussions where consumers noticed similarities between the two brands’ shoes.

New Balance is asking the court to stop use of the challenged design and is seeking monetary relief, along with other remedies.

For now, New Balance has made its allegations, Decathlon will have an opportunity to respond, and the court has not determined that trademark infringement occurred.

It’s my 44th Birthday… so I figured I might as well be BOLD today, because y’all know I hate making videos! 🤯🎂😂

I brought in my birthday watching Tyler Perry Why Did I Get Married Again?, and while I absolutely loved the movie, I walked away thinking about something even bigger than the film itself.

I have admired the brilliant mind, vision, faith, perseverance and business acumen of Tyler Perry for nearly 20 years.

I remember watching his plays on DVD long before Tyler Perry Studios existed as we know it today. I remember going to see the stage play live with Kelly Price! To witness what he has built from the vision God gave him has been one of the greatest examples to me of what is possible when you keep believing, keep building and OWN what you create.

So, in the spirit of 44WARD™, I decided to stop being scared and say this OUT LOUD. 😂

Mr. Perry, I would love the opportunity to have you as a mentor one day. To sit at the table, listen, learn and understand how you think about vision, ownership, business, impact and legacy.

And while we’re putting BIG things into the atmosphere… 😂🙏🏽

I’d love for R.J. Pierce Law Group to have the honor of serving you and your brands one day, too.

There. I said it. 🤯😂

Because maybe part of becoming the woman capable of stewarding the life I’ve been praying for is being courageous enough to SAY what I desire before I know exactly how it will happen.

There couldn’t have been a better way to close out August than right here at home in Chicago. ❤️

Yesterday, my baby, and YES, he is STILL my baby 😂, turned 25, and today my beautiful Momma celebrates 72 years of life! 🎉

This weekend, we celebrated them both, including surprising my Momma surrounded by family and so much love. Watching her cry happy tears is a moment I’ll never forget.

Family. Life. Love. Legacy.
That’s what all of this is really about for me.

And it feels especially fitting to close August celebrating their lives and walk straight into September celebrating mine because tomorrow…

IT’S OFFICIALLY MY BIRTHDAY MONTH! ♍️🎉

And September is FULL…and apparently, so is my suitcase. 😂✈️

Lionel Richie is taking steps to secure one of the most recognizable assets in entertainment, his voice.

The legendary singer recently filed trademark applications for sound recordings featuring iconic phrases and lyrics from songs like “Hello,” “All Night Long,” “Easy,” and “Say You, Say Me.” His filings come just months after Taylor Swift sought trademark protection for specific recordings of her voice and likeness.

What’s interesting is that Lionel Richie is not new to brand security. Over the years, he has secured trademarks related to his name, logos, and merchandise, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to securing the business behind the brand.

Here’s where it gets interesting: trademark law doesn’t automatically secure a person’s entire voice. Instead, applicants must show that consumers associate specific sounds, phrases, or recordings with them as a source identifier. They have to have certain words attached to sound like “you got mail” or whistle like Harlem Globe Trotters.

Foul or Fair? Should celebrities be able to trademark signature voice clips and catchphrases in the age of AI?
