There was no single defining moment. No lightning bolt that knocked me out my chair. It was more of a series of annoyances over the years. Since 1996 Iāve witnessed the endless parade of ego marketing and narcissism and greed prevalent in the sales arena, and especially the real estate industry. Whether it was big banner ads with agentās heads spotlighted at the top of the page next to corny overused tag lines like āA House SOLD Nameā or āEverything I Touch Turns to SOLDā or a billboard with a perfectly manicured head and shoulders proclaiming āIf I donāt sell your home in 3 minutes, Iāll BUY it myself!!!ā
I noticed that most of these headlines and tag lines were marinated in lots of asterisks and exclamation marks. It was as if simple written words werenāt enough. These attention deprived āprofessionalsā had to scream their amazing accomplishments at you.
When I met some of these types of agents and realized they were no more charming in person than in their ego indulgent advertising, it was a mix of expected disappointment and annoyance. No one wants to hear someone talk about themselves. What happened to being a good listener? In response to these Type A agents, I took the opposite approach. I asked potential clients questions and listened to their answers. They seemed to appreciate the relief of being heard instead of preached at.
I didnāt proclaim my ranking or how much money I earned last year. I knew they really didnāt care. What matters to buyers and sellers is finding an agent who will be loyal and trustworthy to them. Loyalty and trust isnāt built on the backs of bragging and ego. It comes from humility and kept promises and honesty. Thatās why I started spending as much time pointing out flaws in potential homes for my buyers as I did in pointing out the selling features. If a client feels like the agent is more concerned with hurrying up and earning a couple bucks over making sure the buyerās needs are met and protected, then trust is out the window.
So these tiny little annoyances and revelations through the years built up until finally, I realized there was something I could do to maybe push the industry in a new direction. By focusing on the client over the commission, by talking about the clientās dreams over my track record, by highlighting our community and all the selfless people it has to offer, by focusing on THESE types of things, perhaps we can get this industry into some sort of positive reputation rather than the negativity of stereotypical sleazy salespeople and client abusing opportunists.
Thus IMPACT Carolinas Realty was born. It is a dream child of mine and I am excited to have launched it. I am also excited to bring you with me on this journey to redefine the real estate industry. There are tons of agents out there. Now more than ever since we are in this crazy sellerās market. Lots of them have jumped in because they have this fantasy of āquick richesā as evidenced by HGTV and other cable channels and shows. Most of them will jump right back out of the industry as soon as the market shifts again and itās not quite so easy to sell houses again.
Because markets shift like the tides. And when problems arise, or obstacles fall in the way of your smooth closing, or one of the dozens of faceless people who in some way touch your transaction between contract to closing, you want someone who will put your needs over their wallet. I know I would want that type of agent. Thatās the agent I strive to be. Itās the type of agent I will be recruiting as I grow my firm to six, twelve, fifteen, thirty, ninety agents over the years. Slow and steady, carefully selecting those true professionals who share in my belief of valuing the relationship over the single transaction. It is this type of agent who has the heart and the experience to handle the craziness that can arise mid transaction, smoothing it over, solving problems quickly because theyāve seen it all before. Calling you the client, not just to tell you about the problem, but to also present a couple of options for solving it in that same conversation.
This is my dream for the business. For my clients. And Iām humbled to see it coming true.
