Four UNC School of Law students received recognition from practitioners and national publications this spring for scholarship tackling real gaps in consumer finance law.

✦ Gabrielle Lanoue wrote on credit reporting accuracy and the Fourth Circuit's new standard under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, featured on NC Bankruptcy Expert.

✦ Carsen Masterton traced a loophole in North Carolina's Debt Adjusting Act enabling "façade law firms" to exploit struggling debtors, also featured on NC Bankruptcy Expert.

✦ MaKenzie Leonard will publish on the GENIUS Act's bankruptcy provisions in the American Bankruptcy Institute Journal this September.

✦ Hunter Wright's independent study on bad-faith bankruptcy dismissals was accepted by the Norton Annual Survey of Bankruptcy Law.

Congratulations to these scholars on work that's already shaping the conversation. 🎓

We were honored to welcome uncprovost to Carolina Law as part of his Carolina Listening Tour! 🏛️

From simulation courses and clinics serving real clients, to externships alongside judges and public defenders, our students don’t just learn the law, they live it. This year alone, they contributed 4,800 hours of free legal services, including support for victims of Hurricane Helene, and with new AI literacy courses rolling out for all incoming students, we’re making sure every Carolina Law graduate is ready for the profession ahead.

Thank you for taking the time to listen, engage, and invest in what’s happening across our campus!

What happens when two legal minds from opposite ends of the political spectrum share a stage? A masterclass in civil discourse 🤝

Judge Richard Myers ’98 and Professor Bill Marshall, longtime Carolina Law colleagues, reunited for the Carolina Law Community Conversation: Bridging the Gap, moderated by former Professor Mary-Rose Papandrea.

Their message to students was clear: the best lawyers know the other side’s argument as well as their own. Listen to persuade, not just to respond. And as Judge Myers put it: “If your principles never conflict with your preferences, you have no principles, only preferences.”

Carolina Law is taking a proactive approach to AI in legal education. With a mandatory 1L AI literacy program and three new AI-focused courses on the horizon, the School is preparing graduates to meet employer expectations head-on. As Associate Dean Robert Birrenkott noted, AI proficiency has moved from speculation to expectation in the legal market — and our students are ready.

Andy Hessick, who has served as interim dean of the UNC School of Law since September 2025, has accepted the role on a permanent basis, effective immediately 🎉

“We are delighted to name Andy Hessick as our next dean of the School of Law,” said Magnus
Egerstedt, executive vice chancellor and provost. “He brings deep expertise in both the legal
profession and legal education, along with a strong understanding of the school and its mission.
His thoughtful leadership and clear vision make him exceptionally well positioned to lead its
next chapter.”

Hessick is the Judge John J. Parker Distinguished Professor of Law and served as associate dean
for strategy and planning at the law school under former Dean Martin Brinkley. He has led the
school since Brinkley stepped down to focus on teaching. Hessick has been a Carolina law faculty member since 2016 and was named associate dean in 2018. He and Brinkley led the efforts to bolster the school’s reputation and support its growth. The No. 18 ranking was repeated in 2026, placing the school in the top 10% of law schools and tying with
Georgetown University Law Center.

“I’m honored and humbled to serve as dean of the School of Law,” Hessick said. “For over 180
years, Carolina Law has produced lawyers and leaders who serve in North Carolina and
throughout the world, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to continue that proud legacy and to guide Carolina Law into the future.”

Congratulations to Professor Noah H. Marks, who will present his research at the 2026 Harvard/Stanford/Yale Junior Faculty Forum at Yale Law School on May 21–22! 🎉

Professor Marks is one of just nine legal scholars selected nationwide to present at the forum, chosen through a rigorous double-blind process.

He’ll be presenting “Lingering Proposed Regulations,” which draws on a unique dataset of every proposed tax regulation published from 1946 through 2025 to reveal how hundreds of unfinalized proposals continue to shape how taxpayers, the IRS, and courts interpret and apply tax law.

Interim Dean Andy Hessick says “He is asking important questions with an eye toward improving our laws and our legal system.” ⚖️

Twenty-five years ago, Brian Meacham ‘03 sat on a folding chair in the Carolina Law parking lot, questioning whether he’d made the right call. Today, as president of the UNC Law Alumni Association, he’s proof that those early doubts don’t define the journey — the connections do.

Now in his second year as LAA president and eighth year in alumni leadership, Meacham has made it his mission to ensure no graduate ever feels disconnected from the Carolina Law family. Because as he’s learned over the years: “The longer you get from law school, the more you realize the importance of those relationships. They’re more important than grades. They’re everything.” 🤝
