May is Older Americans Month, which is a great reminder that estate planning is not just about having documents in place—it is about making things easier for the people you love.

Here are a few simple but important steps you can take to keep your plan organized and effective:

🔹 Get your documents in order
Your estate plan only works if the right people can actually find it. Make sure your will, trust, insurance policies, and account information are organized and accessible to someone you trust.

🔹 Take inventory of your assets
From bank accounts to real estate to digital assets, it is worth taking the time to make sure everything is accounted for and aligned with your plan.

🔹 Think through final arrangements
Not an easy topic, but an important one. Documenting your wishes (and even pre-planning, if appropriate) can take a significant burden off your family later.

A little organization now can create a lot of clarity and peace of mind down the road.

If it has been a while since you reviewed your plan, this is a great time to revisit it.

May the 4th (…er, the Force) be with you!

When people think about estate planning, they usually focus on the big assets.

But in many cases, it’s the personal items—jewelry, furniture, keepsakes—that carry the most emotional weight.

If those items aren’t clearly addressed, it can lead to confusion or even conflict among family members.

A personal property memorandum is a simple way to provide clarity while keeping your overall plan flexible.

Sometimes it’s the thoughtful details that matter most

As life changes, your estate plan should change with it.

New family members, shifting priorities, and evolving financial situations can all impact how your plan should be structured.

Having a plan in place is important—but keeping it up to date is just as critical.

If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed yours, this is a good reminder to take a look.

Estate planning isn’t just about what happens after death—it also addresses what happens if you’re unable to make decisions during your lifetime.

Without the right documents in place, your loved ones may face unnecessary delays or complications when trying to step in and help.

Health care directives, including a medical power of attorney, allow you to name someone you trust to make decisions and ensure your wishes are carried out.

Many people have these documents in place but haven’t reviewed them in years.

If you’re not sure yours still reflects your wishes—or complies with current law—it may be time for a quick check-in.

Naming a primary beneficiary is an important step—but it’s not enough on its own.

Life happens. If that person is unable or unwilling to inherit, and there’s no backup plan in place, it can create unnecessary complications, including:

• Assets passing through probate
• Distributions that don’t reflect your intent
• A plan that lacks flexibility when it’s needed most

That’s why a well-drafted estate plan includes contingent beneficiaries and thoughtful provisions for “what if” scenarios.

If you’re not sure your plan accounts for life’s curveballs, it may be time for a review.
