Power Of Attorney for College Students – why your student needs one!!
Do you have a child going off to school for the first time or that has been going away to school? Once a child turns 18, parents lose all legal authority to their child’s medical records and finances even in emergencies. Financial power of attorney allows the selected attorney-in-fact to manage tuition, bills, or rent payments, among other time sensitive matters.
A financial POA is helpful if a student is studying abroad, away for school or unreachable and time sensitive bills that need to be paid or time sensitive decisions need to be made.
We, at Bean & O’Connor, LLC recommend four documents to help prepare families for the unexpected when their child is away for school: healthcare car proxy, financial power of attorney, HIPAA authorization, and FERPA releases. These documents allow parents/guardians to able to step in without unnecessary legal hurdles if unforeseen challenges arise. Power of Attorney for college students helps bring peace of mind and clarity for families during the exciting but unpredictable college years.
