Sesame is one of the fastest-growing food allergies in the United States. According to a 2010 survey, at least hundreds of thousands American are allergic to the flowering seed. Food Allergy Research & Education recognizes sesame as a top allergen, as does the UK Food Standards Agency.

After years of lobbying from the U.S. food allergy community, the FDA announced today it is launching the formal process that could lead to sesame becoming the ninth top allergen in the United States.
