On September 21, 1981, the U.S. Senate unanimously confirmed Sandra Day O’Connor as the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States.

Her confirmation shattered a barrier that had stood for nearly two centuries.

The milestone was especially remarkable considering the obstacles O’Connor herself faced entering the legal profession. Despite graduating near the top of her class at Stanford Law School, she struggled to find work as an attorney because many law firms at the time would not hire women as lawyers.

Decades later, she would take her place on the nation’s highest court. During her confirmation hearings, O’Connor reflected on the significance of the moment:

“I happily share the honor with millions of American women of yesterday and of today whose abilities and whose conduct have given me this opportunity for service.”

Justice O’Connor served on the Supreme Court for nearly 25 years, from 1981 until her retirement in 2006.

Today, we remember a milestone that changed the face of the American judiciary and opened a door for generations of women in the legal profession who followed.
