Our small team of business, technology, and law-enforcement professionals mobilized around this idea because we believe that effective and accessible personal security is critical not only for the well-being of the individual, but also for the vitality of the communities,

businesses, and cultural institutions that make our cities so vibrant. We were tired of hearing stories from friends and family and on the news about people, especially women, feeling unsafe in their communities. We wanted a solution that would give people a proactive way to deal with “gray area” safety issues—situations that feel potentially risky but don’t warrant using traditional emergency services like 911. Whisel is a network of trained and licensed personal security professionals. Coordinated through the Whisel app, our Security Partners are available to walk you to your car, remove you from a tense situation, or be there—at your side—just in case. Whisel makes it easy to make responsible choices about personal security. Currently in beta testing in Austin, Texas.

Not sure what Cinco de Mayo is all about? Well, you're not alone...here's the scoop:

Cinco de Mayo commemorates a military victory over France — not Spain. Why was Mexico at war with France? Because the Mexican government had defaulted on its foreign debt to several European countries, so France invaded our southern neighbor.

Napoleon III hoped to install a monarchy in Mexico (which he was able to do for a few years before Mexico ousted the French). "The French army was considered the best army in the world at the time, and they had not been defeated in decades...so this was a real David versus Goliath situation that inspired Mexicans at home and in the U.S.

The “Pinkertons” were the nation’s first and most prominent private police force.

Regulation of the private security industry began in 1915, when California enacted a licensing requirement for private investigators. The history of the industry in the United States, however, dates back nearly another century. Its founder was Allan Pinkerton, who immigrated to this country in 1843. By 1850, he had founded the Chicago-based Pinkerton National Detective Agency, which would quickly become the industry's largest private security companies.

The world is changed by those who SPEAK UP. In 2008, a young traveler named Sean traveled through eastern Congo to learn about a war he knew nothing about. Just a few days later he found himself in a military encampment, where he met five boys being held prisoner by the national army. The boys had been child soldiers, taken from their homes and forced to fight, until one night they escaped and ran to the national army for refuge.

Now in the hands of their own military, they were being treated as enemies of the state. He spent the day with the boys, trading stories, laughter and tears.

After he and his partner worked with the UN to have the boys released. He went home that night and wrote the Falling Whistles journal. A single story of a single day. It was originally sent to about 80 friends and family, who forwarded it around the world.
