New York State Police and the New York State Department of Transportation came together this morning to conduct “Operation Hardhat” geared towards stopping speeding and other traffic violations in work zones.

Just last month a four-vehicle accident at the work zone on Route 17 eastbound in Windsor left minor injuries but raised even more concerns for the safety of road workers.

Operation Hardhat is a project where New York State Troopers dress as members of the DOT working on the highway and clock drivers’ speeds as they go through the work zone.

The signs for the speed reduction to 55 miles per hour were placed approximately a mile and a half before the work zone began. Despite the warning in advance, the fastest car of the day was clocked traveling 92 miles per hour through the work zone, nearly 40 miles per hour over the posted limit.

New York State Department of Transportation Public Information Specialist for Region 9, Dan Scharfenberger pleaded that people slow down through work zones and keep the DOT workers safe.

“What we really need to do is just realize when those orange cones, those orange barrels, when those things are out there to take a step back slow down, keep people safe, keep yourself safe as a driver as well,” said Scharfenberger.

Throughout the four hours state police were at the work zone they handed out a total of 75 tickets.

The tickets included:

58 tickets for speeding
4 failure to move over tickets
3 seatbelt tickets
1 child seatbelt ticket
3 cellphone use tickets
6 other miscellaneous tickets
State Trooper Aga Tinker stressed during a 12 News ride along with the trooper that people ignoring the speed creates an extremely dangerous work environment for DOT employees.

“The highest we’ve stopped today was about 84 mph in a 55mph work zone,” said Tinker. “Where there are workers who are on the side of the road working with their heads down, working on the bridge, not paying attention to traffic at all paying attention to their work we need to keep those people safe.”

In 2019 DOT maintenance worker Matt Howe was killed in a work zone accident while working on Route 17 in Owego. Howe’s death is an example of why it’s so important to follow the work zone traffic laws to prevent future tragedy.

While hiring a traffic lawyer might seem like an extra expense up front, it’s an investment that can save you a lot more in the long run.

By keeping points off your record and avoiding increased insurance premiums, you’re actually saving money. Plus, with a clean driving record, you’ll be in a better position if you ever need to contest another ticket down the road. And by keeping points off your license, you’ll avoid the possibility of being placed in the NYS Driver Responsibilty Assessment which is an administrative fee charged by theDMV once you obtain 6-points or more on your license in addition to a fine assessed by the Court.

My representation in your case is also about peace of mind.

Knowing that you have a skilled advocate on your side, can take
a huge weight off your shoulders.

Instead of stressing about your court date or second-guessing your decisions, you can rest easy knowing your case is in good hands.

Conclusion: It Pays to Have a
Knowledgeable and experienced lawyer in Your Corner.

In the end, the question isn’t about whether you can fight a traffic ticket on your own—you probably can. The real question is whether you should.

With the potential costs of points, fines, assessments, insurance increases, and the time and stress of handling it yourself, hiring a traffic lawyer is often the smartest choice.

My representation brings expertise, experience, and a higher likelihood of a favorable outcome—benefits that are well worth the cost.

So, before you decide to just pay that ticket or go it alone, think about what’s really at stake. It might just pay to have the DeNigris Law Firm in your corner.
