ALIAB FAIRYTALES: THE STORY OF THE COBRA OF PAN-MAAN BOL, A LION KING ACENG-JONG AND A KILLER BOC AKOLIC:-

By: Manyang Chapa II

Last year I wrote one of the most fascinating Aliab's fairytale stories which has survived the test of time in the art and literature of the Aliab people, the story of a cannibal lionness of Athiempiny village and Mariar-Abuoi; a prestigious bull of a man called Abuoi Beek.

In this regard, I then promised my readers to also narrate a coincidence story of the same character and this is the story of a Cobra of Pan-Maan Bol, a Lion King known as Acheng-Jong and a murderous blacksmith called Boc Akolic aka Akolic Majak.

There are two proverbs in Aliab derived from this story. Songs were sung about this. And many stories told altogether. The first proverb tells of a desperate person. And the second one of a brave or confidential person. The Aliab songs composers would sing that, “as desperate as the Cobra of Pan-Maan Bol,” and also that “as brave as Acheng-Jong.”

These two beasts of prey and a slaughterer terrorised Aliab, their properties and standard of living for several years. They invaded and conquered Torch and Gelkou. All the cattle camps in and around Riethok in Torch and Gelkou of Roor-Apuk were controlled by these dangerous creatures. They eliminated the existence of every human or animal and with devastative and hazardous annihilation of human lives, cattle, goats and sheep.

However, Torch and Gelkou are the Aliab cattle keepers grazing fields during dry season. Due to the conquest of Riethok in Torch by the Cobra of Pan-Maan Bol and occupation of Gelkou by both the King Lion Acheng-Jong and Boc Akolic, Aliab's cattle keepers and their livestocks were displaced to Gel-Angon and Rum-Belok respectively.

For easy comprehension and understanding of this story, and before taking you through, I would like you to know the nature of this snake I called Pan-Maan Bol's Cobra, the locations of Pan-Maan Bol itself, the Lion King

“A kraal that has untameable cow is always not peaceful and will never be peaceful. Because, the untameable cow is aggressive in its life span, especially when it comes to rearing and milking. It is for the peacefulness of the kraal and the common good of the cattle camp that the untameable cow should be tame, whether or not such a practice includes the use of robes and sticks.”

ORIGIN OF NAMING; AKUEEI, AKEER, RORAPUK AND BELOK

I STAND TO BE CORRECTED HERE!

After both Jokhom and Nyinger Nhialmadol settled in Panka and Padunyiel respectively, they plotted ways of invading Gelkou and Pap region when the place where Jokhom's Bull spent days, and come back with,"apaac" on its horns was spied and fully inspected.
A power spirit known as Aloriir was sent to confuse and send Agaar away. They got a man named Awurot with his parents (this is where Panmanawurot came from) and headed to Pap.
According to Majak Ngut's narrative in 2013, the language we are currently using is far much different from the language our ancestors used. He said if Nyinger, Ajuot,Biri & Nyaraar and Jokhom come back today, they will ask themselves, "which people are living in place of our children?"
"Our language is not the same as the language of our ancestors and that's why naming cattle camps is different." He added.
All of them first settled in Matjuoor and devised powers that chased Pap's original inhabitants.
THE NAMING
After successful conquest of Pap and Gelkou regions, Jokhom called Nyinger, Biri, Nyaraar and Ajuot. He said names were to be given.
He said Reng Dejo were to go to the Rong Ciec, ( current Abuyung) to join Dei in reclaiming new lands ( bik piny lo keer) and therefore would be called Akeer because they would establish new environment.
Nyinger said to natives who were got in the place that he was laying his head ( akuɛɛi ye nhom) and the people were to be called Akueei. There were some original natives known as Akueei and this name was preferred to be used by the elders at the time.
He told Abor and Akol Jokhom to be together with Akueei. They first settled in Ahol and would displace Jur next to them ( bik piny de Jur Lok) and were called Belok because they would displace the foreigners next to them.
Now Reng Nyakhor remained with no name. The panel now said to Jokhom, your voice has to be compensated because we have talked a lot. Your son Reng Nyakhor together with Luel and Angon and Wengachiek should be called Rhor Apuk ( The voice is compensated).
After this,
Biri & Nyaraar remained in Matjuoor.
Wet ke Jokhom were separated: Abor and Akol went to Wunbar then to Ahol in order to reclaim new lands.
Reng Dejo moved northwards bi piny lo keer.
Nyinger attached himself to natives
Reng Nyakhor, with his sons and moved to Mariar, some parts of Reetke Wetke Reng (Atorok). Atorok was full of many hills before Nyinger asked Jokhom to relocate.and Angon settling in both Maker and Pandit while Luel remained in Panluel. Jungun and Deei remained in the highlands.

THE ALIAB DINKA

BY student: Abednego Makuach Nyanahol Ngut Thokluel

The Aliab Dinka are a subdivision of the DINKA people of South Sudan. They traditionally live in an area West of the upper White Nile River. The name is also used to refer to a breed of cattle maintained by the Aliab Dinka people and widespread in the other region.
The Aliab Dinka mainly live in Lakes state of South Sudan in the Awerial county, to the west of the Nile. The Aliab valley is a lowland, floodplain to the west of the Bahr el Jebel(Nile) between Tombek in the South and Lake Papiu in the North ( Lake Papiu is next after leaving Rangbek near Gutthom)
The valley is between 2.5 miles (4.0 KM) and 6 miles (9.7km) wide and perhaps 60 km or 37 miles in length.

THE 1919 UPRISING

In 1919 the Aliab Dinka country lay within the Mongalla Province of the Anglo Egyptian Sudan. There was an uprising of the Aliab Dinka that year. A series of Mistreatment ranging from forced labor, low pay, ra**ng women and land grabbing led to the uprising.
The main instigating causes were the ex*****on of Jalueth, the arrest and killing of Kɔc Nyiciɛɛr(Kɔc Akur) youths led to occurrence of the Rebellion in 1919.
In that same year,3000 Aliab Dinka men attacked British police post at Mingkaman (Guotyar) near Bor and killed several policemen.
The Mongalla Province governor Chauncey Hugh Stigand went on patrol himself and on 08/12/1919, he was killed at Pap between Lau river (Gel River) and the white Nile. Two other officers and 24 soldiers and porters were speared to death by a thousand Dinka warriors.
The uprising was put down harshly in 1920 when the British collaborated with Dinka Bor paramount chief. The chief's name I nearly forget but his name was Deng Malual from Twic East. The chief briefed the British government on the tactics that should be employed to conquer the Aliab Communities.
A force under Col Robert Henry Darwal led the expedition. The British had superior weapons. The wore armor to protect themsel
