THE CELESTIAL ODYSSEY OF BAKOLONG BADJI
In the heart of Casamance, where the earth whispers to the ancestors, lives the vibrant memory of a man who defied death itself.
In the village of Niankitte, nestled in the Bignona department, time seems to have stood still to preserve a story as fabulous as it is sacred. It is here, under the vast Casamance sky, that oral tradition recounts the incredible destiny of Bakolong Badji. In the 1890s, this man, of exemplary piety and purity, accomplished what only the greatest prophets have achieved: a direct ascension to heaven.
Bakolong Badji was no ordinary man. He professed such profound reverence for the purity of soul and body that he considered earthly burial the ultimate defilement. Refusing to allow his physical form to one day be profaned by the earth, he conceived of a departure of a divine nature.
When his time came, he summoned the inhabitants of Niankitte and the surrounding villages. In an atmosphere of mystery and solemn respect, he ordered the drums to be beaten. Around the palm wine, the guests began to dance and drink, their rhythms and songs rising like a collective prayer. For several hours, the celebration of life unfolded, while Bakolong prepared for his final journey.
Then, the miracle occurred. Under the astonished gaze of the assembly, the man began to rise, solemnly, inexorably, leaving the solidity of the earth for the call of the heavens. Eyes raised to the clouds, the crowd watched him recede, becoming an increasingly faint silhouette, until the heavens reclaimed him entirely. The very instant they lost sight of him, thunder shattered the silence, splitting the sky with a flash of light. Bakolong had vanished.
But his story did not end there.
Two years passed. When his memory was sharper than ever, he miraculously appeared in a vision to Fodé Akoeroule Badji, a member of his family. From this timeless encounter, Bakolong conveyed a message and a sacred mission: he asked that a stake be planted in a specific place he indicated. In a state of ecstasy, Fodé Akoeroule received a solemn promise: henceforth, during every drought, if the community offered him a rooster, a bull, or a goat as a libation of palm wine, Bakolong would intercede with the celestial powers to bring back abundant rain.
Even today, the inhabitants of Niankitte honor this ancestral pact. Every year, they commemorate his ascension with sacrifices and tributes. Roosters, sheep, and oxen are offered, perpetuating the memory of the one who, out of love for purity, chose not to die, but to ascend to heaven, becoming forever the protective prince of the Diola people and a living link between the land of Casamance and the divine.
