Meeting with my old client yesterday, he shared his experience of taking care of his 83-year-old Mom with dementia. As I listened to his story, I couldn't help but empathize with the immense challenges he faced while juggling a full-time job. He recounted numerous instances where he had to retrieve his mother from the police station because she had wandered off and couldn't find her way back home. This made me ponder - is dementia preventable?
Recently, I found myself frequently visiting the hospital ward as my own mom was admitted due to bone fractures. To my surprise, I noticed a substantial number of patients suffering from dementia in the same wards. It was during this time that I truly began to appreciate the tireless efforts of the nurses who cared for these individuals. Dementia not only places an additional burden on families, particularly those with lower incomes, but also on the dedicated healthcare professionals who work diligently to support them.
Should we delve deeper into the challenges faced by families caring for loved ones with dementia and explore the importance of support systems for both the families and the healthcare workers involved.
