Canada is actively addressing its teacher shortage by implementing new immigration initiatives to attract educators from around the world. In February 2025, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced an Education Category within the Express Entry system, prioritizing teachers, early childhood educators, and special needs instructors for permanent residency.
Key Updates:
• Express Entry Education Category: This new category facilitates a more direct pathway for educators to obtain permanent residency in Canada.
• Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) Eligibility: As of January 2025, fields of study in education are now eligible for the PGWP, offering international students in education-related programs the opportunity to gain Canadian work experience post-graduation.
Application Process for Educators:
• Determine Eligibility: Identify the appropriate National Occupational Classification (NOC) code that matches your teaching experience.
• Educational Credential Assessment (ECA): Obtain an ECA to ensure your foreign qualifications are recognized in Canada.
• Language Proficiency: Demonstrate proficiency in English or French through approved language tests.
• Express Entry Profile: Create an Express Entry profile, highlighting your qualifications and selecting the Education Category to increase your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
These initiatives underscore Canada's commitment to strengthening its education sector by welcoming qualified educators to address current shortages.
