Seeing our MPAs celebrating "victories" for securing funds for a few roads is, frankly, disheartening. While infrastructure is important, let's not forget their primary role – the very reason they were elected to the Provincial Assembly.
Their job, first and foremost, is to make laws. To deliberate, debate, and pass legislation that genuinely improves the lives of citizens across the province. This includes laws addressing education, healthcare, justice, economic growth, and social welfare – the foundational pillars of a functioning society.
Getting funds for roads is part of governance, yes, but it's not the defining measure of a lawmaker's success, nor should it be the focus of their celebrations. It's a basic expectation.
Where is the same fervor, the same celebratory energy, for:
* New, effective laws that protect our rights?
* Legislation that ensures better access to quality education for all?
* Reforms that strengthen our justice system?
* Policies that genuinely uplift our most vulnerable communities?
Let's hold our elected representatives accountable for what truly matters. Their initial and most crucial work is within the assembly halls, shaping the legal framework of our province, not just cutting ribbons on new asphalt.
It's time to shift the focus back to the core responsibilities of an MPA: Lawmaking, not just fundraising.
