Manila, Philippines – June 21, 2025 — The Central Mindanao University (CMU) Debate Varsity proudly clinched the 1st Runner-Up title at the prestigious Young Economists’ Convention (YEC) Debate Competition held at De La Salle University (DLSU), Manila.
Represented by delegates Hajara Kate Japson, Milky Wee Segovia, and Princess Marie Tomaro, the CMU team showcased exceptional argumentation, analytical depth, and teamwork, rising to the top spot during the preliminary rounds—ranking 1st among all competing teams nationwide.
The championship round saw CMU go head-to-head against a powerhouse combined team from De La Salle University and the University of the Philippines, who ultimately secured the championship. Despite this, CMU’s performance was widely commended for its strategic clarity and economic insight.
The team was accompanied and mentored by Atty. James Violon and Dr. Marlou Jebb Andres, who served as advisers throughout the competition.
The 2025 YEC Debate brought together the brightest student debaters from various universities across the country, engaging in intense rounds on pressing economic and policy issues. CMU’s strong finish at a Manila-based national competition once again cements its reputation as one of Mindanao’s leading institutions in academic debate and policy discourse.
This victory reflects CMU’s ongoing commitment to excellence in student leadership, critical thinking, and national-level representation.
Congratulations, CMU Debate Varsity!
