Basic Things To Know ✅⚓️

The Anderson Turn is a quick maneuver used by ships to recover a person who has fallen overboard (Man Overboard or MOB), especially when the casualty is visible and close to the ship. It is considered the fastest recovery method because the vessel immediately turns back toward the victim.

Steps of the Anderson Turn
1. Apply full rudder toward the side where the person fell (MOB side).
The ship makes a sharp turn in the direction of the casualty to quickly return to the location.
2. Reduce speed during the turn.
As the vessel approaches the person in the water, the engine speed is reduced to avoid creating strong propeller wash and to maintain control.
3. Stop the engines when the victim is about 15° off the bow.
This allows the ship to drift safely toward the person for recovery without risking injury from the propeller.

Points To Ponder :
✅Best used when the person overboard is still visible.
✅It is simple and quick, making it effective during emergencies.
✅The goal is to bring the ship back near the casualty as fast as possible while maintaining safety.

✅ In summary
The Anderson Turn is an emergency maneuver where the ship immediately turns toward the MOB, slows down during the approach, and stops engines when close to safely recover the person.

⚓ Overtaking Rules at Sea – COLREGs 🚢

Safety at sea depends on every vessel following the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs). Overtaking situations demand clear communication and precise maneuvering.

**Key Overtaking Rules:**

1. **Identify the Situation** - Determine if you're the overtaking or overtaken vessel
2. **Sound Signals** - Two short blasts to indicate intention to overtake on starboard side
3. **Maintain Safe Distance** - Never cut across the bow of the vessel ahead
4. **Alter Course Early** - Give the other vessel ample time to recognize your intention
5. **Complete Overtaking** - Maintain a safe distance until fully clear of the other vessel

**Critical Point:** The overtaken vessel must maintain course and speed. The overtaking vessel bears full responsibility for safe passage.

Proper overtaking prevents collisions and saves lives. ShipSmith ensures your crew is trained in COLREGs compliance.

⚓ LEEWAY (WIND EFFECT)

Even when the engine is pushing the ship forward, the wind can push it sideways.

This sideways movement caused by wind pressure on the hull and superstructure is called Leeway.

🌬 What is LEEWAY?

Leeway is the angle between the ship’s heading and the actual path through the water caused by wind.

In simple terms:

Wind pushes the vessel sideways.

⚓ Why It Matters

Strong winds can cause a vessel to:

• Drift off the intended track
• Miss waypoints
• Approach shallow waters
• Increase risk near coastlines

🧭 How Navigators Correct It

Experienced officers compensate by:

• Adjusting the course into the wind
• Monitoring radar and visual bearings
• Comparing DR with position fixes

⚓ Seamanship Reminder

The sea does not only move forward.

Wind and current constantly push a ship sideways.

A skilled navigator always understands both forces.

⚓ Currents move the water.
Wind moves the ship.

A good navigator understands both.

Basic Things To Know ✅

This image shows the day and night signals used by different types of vessels so they can be properly identified at sea.

🔆 Day Signals

During daytime, ships display shapes:
• RAM (Restricted Ability to Manoeuvre) – ball/diamond/ball shapes
• Fishing Vessel – two cones facing each other
• Sailing Vessel – no shapes unless also using the engine
• PD (Pilot Duty) Vessel – no special shapes, but has a pilot flag (not shown here)
• NUC (Not Under Command) – two black balls
• CBD (Constrained by Draft) – a cylinder shape

🌙 Night Signals

At night, ships use lights instead of shapes:
• RAM Vessel – red-white-red lights
• Fishing Vessel – red over white lights
• Sailing Vessel – red and green sidelights with no masthead light
• PD Vessel – white over red lights
• NUC Vessel – two red lights
• CBD Vessel – three red lights in a vertical line

These signals help other vessels know who has maneuvering priority and avoid collisions.

SEAMADISKARTES UNITE!

We, the seafarers, will not be silenced! It's time to put our foot down and demand what is rightfully ours - HAZARD PAY for sailing through high-risk zones, especially in areas plagued by missile and drone threats!

Don't give us excuses about "no attack yet" or "it's not that bad". We know the risks, and we deserve to be compensated for putting our lives on the line every day.

To the companies, we say: PAY UP! Include HAZARD PAY in our contracts, and make sure it's a fair and decent amount. We're not just asking, we're demanding it!

Let's stand together, SEAMADISKARTES! Refuse to sail without proper compensation, and let's make our voices heard!

PAY THE HIGH RISK PAY EVEN WITHOUT ATTACK!
